FRODE WEIERUD’s HISTORICAL RESEARCH TECHNIQUES
“I use the Vacuum Cleaner Principle of trying to suck up information from all possible corners. I have done this is on many fronts:” I have located where the main Engima companies and production facilities were situated and then started to contact the local museums and archives in the vicinity. I have been doing research on people involved in the Enigma history. I try to trace where they lived, what happened to them and then see if I can trace any of their surviving ancestors. It is family & geneological research. All the documentation I have discovered are from archives in Germany. I have also done a lot of FOIA and previously, when it was possible, MDRs. It is true that a lot of the material was destroyed but quite a sizeable amount survived. Both the Russians and the TICOM teams collected Enigma material, but they still left documents behind. I am still trying to trace some of these documents which I know were removed from Berlin in 1947 and went somewhere in Bavaria. Who has them today ? I am especially interested in the Secret Enigma Patents that I know were issued from 1929 to I have the patent numbers but the German patent office does not have them because the main patent collection was intentionally firebombed in But I think there are copies somewhere.
