4 Geography The Czech Republic's landscape is dominated by the Bohemian Massif. This ring of the mountains encircles a large elevated basin - the Bohemian Plateau. The principal rivers are Elbe and Vltava.

6 Central Bohemia Covering an area immediately around Prague, Central Bohemia offers some wonderful options for day trips from the city, such as the castles of Karlštejn and Konopiště, or the medieval town of Kutná Hora.

7 Southern Bohemia Southern Bohemia with its historic towns and man-made lakes is one of Czech Republic's most picturesque regions. It is also a popular biking destination. One of its most visited towns is the beautiful Český Krumlov.

8 Northern Bohemia The lesser known region of Northern Bohemia contains the unique sandstone rock formations of the Czech Switzerland National Park.

9 Western Bohemia Western Bohemia is where the best known Czech spa towns are located. Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) is the most popular and can be visited on a day trip from Prague.

10 Eastern Bohemia The Bohemian Paradise nature reserve is a beautiful area for hiking, as are the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše). The charming towns of Litomyšl or Jičín as well as Eastern Bohemia's castles are well worth visiting.

11 Moravia and Czech Silesia
The eastern part of the Czech Republic is made up of Moravia and Silesia. Both regions have a varied history and are attractive geographically. The north has attractive mountains and the south, endless plains. You will find reservoirs, lakes, ponds and karst formations here. There are also many opportunities for sports activities. Various historic monuments are also worth seeing. Moravia has much to offer tourists.

12 PRAGUE (the capital) Prague‘s not only the capital, it‘s also the biggest city of the Czech Republic and 15th biggest city of the European Union. The city lies on the Vltava river, inside of the middle Bohemian region (there are 14 regions, including Prague). 13 Holidays and traditions
March 19th: St. Joseph's Day Similar to the Irish St. Patrick's Day, the Czech St. Joseph's Day is more subdued, and is celebrated around the same time in March each year.   Easter Easter is celebrated as a cheerful and fun holiday.  Many villages observe their own special set of Easter customs and traditions.  Easter is one of the most joyful holidays in the Czech nation. April 30th: The Burning of the Witches This custom takes place on the evening of April 30th as Czechs build bonfires and create an effigy of the legendary witch who perpetuated winter.  The old belief was that witches' powers diminished as the weather warmed.  Thus, in burning a witch figure, it was believed that the cold weather could be eradicated much more quickly. May 1st: The Day of Love May 1st is a day devoted to lovers and the Czech romantic poet Karel Hynek Mácha.

15 July 5th: Day of Slavic Missionaries Cyril and Methodius
Important figures in Czech history; Cyril and Methodius were Bysantine Greek brothers.  These two men brought Christianity to the Great Moravian Empire in the year 863 and also created the Slavonic language and alphabet.  July 6th: Anniversary of the Execution of Han Hus This holiday honors Jan Hus who was an important Czech religious reformer who was burned at the stake in 1415.  November 2nd: All Souls' Day It‘s the day where Czechs celebrate their ancestors.  This day is dedicated to honoring deceased family members much like Memorial Day is in the United States.  People go to cemeteries to decorate graves with flowers.  December 5th: St. Nicholas Tradition St. Nicholas Day, an exciting holiday for children, reminds us that Christmas is not far. December 24 – 26th: Christmas Christmas is one of the biggest and most popular holidays in the Czech Republic. The streets are lit by thousands of lights, the festive decorations are ubiquitous and the carols that are heard everywhere leave no-one in doubt that it is one of the most beautiful times of year.

16 Most popular sports Football (soccer) Football is the most popular sport in the Czech Republic. The most popular club, AC Sparta Praha, have been remarkably successful in both domestic and European contests. Ice hockey  For years Czechoslovakia's national ice hockey teams have ranked among the top five or six national teams in the world. The national ice hockey team have won the World Hockey Championships seven times. Today, Czech ice hockey suffers from a mass exodus of its best players to foreign leagues, especially to the NHL. Tennis  Czech tennis players have been remarkably successful in international competitions. One of them, Martina Navrtilova, is arguably the best female tennis player of all time.

Alphonse Mucha ( ) Art nouveau painter and poster designer who spent most of his life in France. Franz Kafka ( ) Austrian-Czech writer born in Prague, a significant figure in the 20th century literature. Karel Čapek ( ) Czech writer and playwright.  He and his brother Josef first introduced the word "robot" in their science-fiction play R.U.R. in 1921.
