Battle of Jutland By Slami Blening, Tlyler Glall, AlLex Plark, Clole Plenz, Slalina Zlhang
2
Thesis The Battle of Jutland was a massive example of the importance of a navy to a country’s power and expansion—Britain never allowed Germany to resuscitate its naval influence, and thus crippled the nation by curtailing its maritime strength and rendering it unable to capitalize on colonial resources.
3
Basic Info: Jutland is a peninsula in northern Europe that is mostly part of Denmark British Royal Navy’s Grand Fleet vs Imperial Germany's High Seas Fleet German ships had superior construction, but were significantly outnumbered Largest naval battle of WWI and its only full-scale battleship clash May 31st, 1916 to June 1st, 1916 Both sides claimed victory, praised sailors heavily Britain had heavier losses, but Germany had been routed by the superior GB navy Britain stays wary of Germany’s “fleet in being”, concentrates in North Sea GER accepts that fleet was contained, resorts to submarine warfare, destroying opposing Allied and neutral trade Zimmermann Telegram (suggests negotiation alliance between Germany & Mexico) triggers USA declaration of war on GER
5
Commanding Officers England - Grand Fleet Admiral Sir John Jellicoe
Assisted by Vice-Admiral Sir David Beatty Germany - High Seas Fleet Admiral Reinhard Scheer Assisted by Vice-Admiral Franz Hipper
6
Build-Up Industrialization combined with the pre-war arms race → massive amounts of materials funneled into navies in Germany and Britain Both of these colossi had holdings around the world The past century had seen unrivaled British naval supremacy and domination of a quarter of the globe At the turn of the century, Britain still held the most powerful navy Wasn't going to get shown up by an upstart Middle European nation Thought it was going to be another Trafalgar
7
The Battle Britain outnumbers Germany Two major phases
37:27 in heavy units, 113:72 in light support craft Two major phases Running artillery duel of scouting forces Germany more severely damaged, but superior honeycomb structure hulls holds up Britain loses three battlecruisers to no anti-flash protection in gun turrets, fire from incoming shells ignites powder stored on deck British battle line cuts Germans off from home base and crosses the “T” twice British losses: 6,784 men, 14 ships, 111,000 tons German losses: 3,058 men, 11 ships, 62,000 tons Indecisive outcome overall - both sides claim victory Strategically decisive - leads to GER fleet driven home, only goes out on minor sweeps
9
Consequences German fleet ceased to fully mobilize, German admirals relied on submarine attacks → eventually give America reason to go to war This was the precursor for the U-boats that terrorized Allied ships throughout World War 2 Germans, unable to utilize their fleet, turned to raiding Sustained British naval supremacy meant that Britain could protect her overseas territories that she depended on for raw materials Enforced British blockade of continental Germany, leading to a lack of supplies that both the armies and civilians of Germany desperately needed. Basically British victory… although not decisive or clear
