1 The CERN openlab and the European DataGrid Project
First CERN 27 September 2002 Manuel Delfino Division Leader of Information Technology, CERN

2

3 CERN openlab vision CERN Industrial partner Industrial partner
NETWORKING CERN Networking with industry – cross fertilisation GROWTH Growing the Grid: ”from where the web was born, to where the Grid grew up” Catalysing the next IT revolution SPINNING OUT New technologies and companies evolving OPENING UP CERN opening up, reaching out to the world CERN Industrial partner

4 CERN openlab mission Solve LHC computing challenges through collaboration with industry Develop and deploy Grid technologies in an open environment Train a new generation of software engineers in Europe

5 CERN openlab R&D project
The CERN opencluster Objective: ultrahigh performance computer cluster linked to Grid Combining in Year 1 in-kind donations of: 32 Intel Itanium® 2 processors, 10 gigabit Ethernet backbone by Enterasys Networks, HP hardware to construct a 32-node cluster of computers Researchers from industrial partners at CERN

6 CERN openlab development
2-3 more partners expected to join CERN openlab for DataGrid applications Studying creation of other openlabs in other technology areas Envisaging sponsored openlab workshops and student programme For more details see

7 The EU DataGrid project
The project funded by the European Union to set up a computational and data-intensive grid of resources for the analysis of data from scientific exploration.

8 The European DataGrid project
The DataGrid Project affords real and challenging scientific applications: High Energy Physics process the huge amount of data from LHC experimentations Biology and Medical Imaging sharing of genomic databases for the benefit of international cooperation processing of medical images for medical collaborations Earth Observations access and analysis of atmospheric ozone data collected by satellites such as Envisat-1

9 The European DataGrid project
6 main contractors, 15 assistant contractors 9.8 millions € funded by EU with substantial co-funding 150 Full Time Equivalent over 3 years Flagship project of the EU IST GRID program Project started Jan 2001, duration 3 years

10 Principal contractors
CERN CNRS ESA/ESRIN INFN NIKHEF PPARC Associated Partners from industry Compagnie des Signaux – France DATAMAT – Italy IBM - UK

11 Goals for the European DataGrid project
Develop an open source middleware for fabric & grid management Deploy a large scale testbed Set-up production quality demonstrations Collaborate with and complement other European and US projects Involve industries to create the critical mass of interest for the success of the project For more information see

12 Beyond the European DataGrid project
CERN involved in other complementary EU Grid projects Grid Infrastructure should be major subject in FP6 CERN aims to have a leading role in such projects SMEs are strongly encouraged as partners in FP6

13 Conclusion CERN collaborates with industry on Grid development through
CERN openlab European projects opportunities for SMEs
