7 FAIRCHILD Optoplanar® Technology
The high-speed and gate drive optocoupler families utilize Fairchild’s proprietary Optoplanar® coplanar packaging technology, and optimized IC design to guarantee minimum 20 kV/μs Common Mode Rejection (CMR). Competitive Advantages: High Common Mode Noise Rejection (CMR). This construction minimizes the capacitive charge buildup that occurs in the over-under construction. Fixed isolation gap (thickness through insulation) for a consistent high input to output isolation voltage. The High-Speed and Gate Drive series are packaged in Fairchild’s patented coplanar packaging technology called Optoplanar®, and using optimized IC design to guarantee 20kV/µs minimum Common Mode Noise Rejection rating. This co-planar packaging eliminates the capacitive charge buildup, and thus reduces package capacitance by more than 30% compared to competitive solutions, which uses the over-under construction. In addition the fixed isolation gap, as defined by the thickness through insulation, provide a consistently high input to output isolation voltage. These competitive advantages will further differentiate us from our competitors, especially when used in noisy industrial environments. Positioned as high CMR, provides a credible edge over competitive alternatives; high CMR is a consistent value-added message from Product Line to the field and end customers. 30 Value Propositions The gate driver optocouplers offer superior switching performance, lower power consumption and superior common mode transient immunity compared to competitive devices on the market. Fairchild’s gate driver optocoupler family employs PMOS power transistor for the pull-up. Utilization of the PMOS transistor results in reduced power consumption within the optocoupler due to its ~1.5 Ω RDS(ON). This compares to ~7.5 Ω RDS(ON) for competitive products that utilize bipolar (triple darlington) pull-ups. The newer, wide-body SO5, SO16, and DIP8 “T” packages provide wider (>10 mm) clearance and (>8 mm) creepage distances along with a working voltage (UIORM) of 1,414 V peak and transient isolation voltage of 8,000 V peak. These packages offer an equivalent to Avago’s HCNW wide body type of optocouplers.

The first optocoupler in OptoHiT™ Series, FODM8801, consists of an aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs) infrared light emitting diode optically coupled to a phototransistor, in a compact half pitch, mini-flat, 4-pin package. This segment is usually highly priced with better profit margin as compared to the commoditized Photo-Transistor type. Fairchild, over the past 4 years, has built a credible portfolio of high performance optocouplers, but the revenue has not grown as fast as expected and thus is insignificant compared to the closest competitors. We really need help from our Sales/FAE teams! The objective is to capture a sizeable market share of more than 30% in 2 years’ time. Leveraging Fairchild’s extensive Sales/FAE network and marketing tools to win the Tier 1 and 2 accounts.
