2 Starter: What are the consequences of poor health for an entire country?

6 Malaria This is a real worry in some countries. Imagine if you are fully aware that you could catch a fatal disease at any point of any evening. Scary! Read the passage on p.164

8 HIV/AIDS Read the passage on p.165 and note down where AIDS is most prevalent and who has been hardest hit recently. Pandemic means its infected people on different continents or worldwide.

10 Tuberculosis Rates of infection have been steadily increasing since 1993 until now where there is a 1% increase in cases every year, of which 10-15% goon to develop the disease. TB peaked in 2004/2005. Now, about 30% of the world’s population may be infected with mycobacterium. Common in SE Asia, Africa and rising in Europe. Drug resistance becoming a problem.

11 The WHO Now use p.165 and your internet-enabled phones to write a short paragraph on what health organisations work to find out about a disease and what they do with this information.
