The SmartArt Tool allows for a graphical presentation of thoughts and ideas (in contrast to a CHART that displays numerical data).
You could use the SHAPES Drawing tools, but SmartArt allows for rapid design (STYLE) changes and easier editing.
You can: add, delete, and modify parts of an existing shape (Ie: a pyramid with 3 levels and be increased or decreased. Borders, Fill Color, Outlines, Text etc.) I have not found an easy way to Save custom SmartArt to a Library!
The [SmartArt Tools] Tab becomes active when you select an Object, and then you have two added Tabs: DESIGN and FORMAT to change individual components of the object.
While PowerPoint allows you to Convert Text to SmartArt, you can COPY from WORD and then PASTE into a dialog box for the SmartArt from within WORD. (or create the object in PowerPoint and then Cut/Paste it back into WORD.
Other Formatting Tools used in WordArt and Pictures such as 3D, Shadow, etc. can be seen in the Live Preview Mode.

Once you have a SmartArt Object, you can edit and modify various attributes.
Depending on the LAYOUT, there will be various options available in the DESIGN tab. (other unavailable options are grayed out.)
You can scroll thru the Layouts and see a Live Preview how the modified object will look.
The FORMAT Tab allows for changes to color, fonts, borders, to all Objects or to selected objects within the SmartArt
