Travel for or to recreation Put a lot of faith in material goods-

People Who get lost Go too far, too fast- not acclimatized (ready for the area) Ignore environmental signs- weather, etc. Ignore body indicators

2. Be aware of some important survival skills and techniques can add to your confidence. - Being confident that you can rationally look at a situation and work through it is the key!

3. If you have experience and practice with survival skills you may be more calm in the event of being lost.

Fear We need to recognize that we all become afraid in a survival situation . ( ie. When any of our basic needs are in jeopardy. We can use fear to motivate good decision making. If we deny fear and that it exists or assume it is not a problem; it could lead to more serious problems and poor judgement. Fear needs to be recognized and manipulated and utilized to your advantage.

Factors that help to decrease or control fear
1. Confidence in available equipment 2. Confidence in leaders ability 3. Concentrating on the job at hand. (ie) food, shelter 4. Having confidence in your survival skills. 5. Trusting in your ability to overcome obstacles.

Activity In a group of 3-4 students answer the following questions
Make sure all group member’s are on the answer sheet. 1. Why would a novice at an outdoor activity be more likely to get lost? Give 3 reasons 2. Explain 4 of the 7 Enemies of the Wilderness survivor.
