Agenda item 2.3 Report of OPAG ISS Matteo dell’Acqua
2
Business as Usual activities
Review, development and update of Manuals and Associated Guides Manual on GTS Manual on WIS Manual on Code Review and development of TDCF New entries for BUFR or GRIB tables introduced Monitoring the migration to TDCF Issues with upper air reports CBS TT Guide on WIS IT Security Guide Guide to the use of VPN on the GTS
3
Business as Usual activities
Evolution of the WMO Core Metadata Profile through fast-track procedures Assessment of WIS Centres Coordination for supporting the implementation and operation of WIS centres Cooperation with the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) A focus on key activities
4
Migration to TDCF Progressing … slowly Surface : 58% Upper-air : 20%
Figure 1 shows that percentage of expected reports that were provided to the GTS by stations in the Regional Basic Synoptic Networks during the period 1-15 April The figures compare the number of reports in Table Driven Code Forms (right-pointing arrows) with the number in Traditional Alphanumeric Code Forms. Only the number of reports is shown in the figures; no account is taken of the validity of the reports.
5
Aviation XML standard 1st version of Aviation XML standard, IWXXM, delivered and approved by Congress Changes required to IWXXM to respond to additional ICAO requirements (Annex 3 Amendment 77 ) and to take into account implementers feedback IWXXM 2.0 released 5
6
WIS Metadata WMO Core Metadata Profile v2 deferred
No evidence of an urgent need to develop a new version of WCMP based on ISO :2014 Focus on improving WIS discovery metadata Generating advice and guidance for metadata authors and tool developers Need to improve metadata quality and 'granularity' of metadata records Improve the user's search experience the way the metadata records are structured is having an impact on the usability of WIS 6
7
WIGOS Metadata Provisional operational implementation of XML data representation for WIGOS Metadata For exchange of WIGOS Metadata and maintenance of OSCAR/Surface via machine-to-machine interfaces 7
8
Time-series information
In collaboration with the Open Geospatial Consortium provision of a generic mechanism for describing in XML time series information in any domain TimeseriesML 1.0 WaterML 2.0 Good example of work with communities outside CBS and make use of OGC groups to progress WMO work 8
9
WIS strategy Facts Changes in data supply patterns and user expectations present new challenges that the current WIS struggles to meet At the same time, changes in technology present new opportunities Develop strategy for the evolution of WIS over the next 10 years in order to broaden the range of information that is available in WIS and improve data producers and data consumers experience WIS 2.0 9 9
10
WIS 2.0 Information System operated by Members built on commercially available services and industry standards Redundant, resilient, efficient and scalable infrastructure To exchange at the right moment the relevant information and avoid moving unnecessary large volumes of data between centres To simplify access to the information and make its use easier in order to develop new products and services Providing applications/services alongside the data … And a catalogue of information and services 10
11
WIS Core Network For GISC to GISC communication and in particular for exchange of GlobalExchange data the current architecture is based on an any to any unicast based solution. The solution is: Politically very challenging (some bilateral links are virtually impossible to set up) Technically difficult to establish, to monitor and to maintain Financially unattractive as the same data is sent multiple times on an expensive network Cloud-based approach could be a solution for GISC to GISC exchange Pilot to raise awareness and to assess various scenario 13 GISCs participate to the pilot 11
12
WIS monitoring Objective : to know how WIS is performing and identify the centres which are creating problems Pilot of the WIS monitoring dashboard has been presented at Cg-17 Flow of information between centres Cache completeness assessment The dashboards and the demo have proved that the technical solution was appropriate for the WIS monitoring Further work is required to make the concept operational 12
13
WIS Security Update on the IT security guide and VPN guide to keep them up to date with the latest technical evolutions Proposal to establish a security related framework for a consistent handling of security issues within WIS A WIS compromised centre should be able to inform a trusted entity 13
