1 Making Instructional Design Effective in E-learning
Brajesh Upadhyay Director, E-product Development and Publishing Elsevier / MC Strategies

2 What will this session cover?
What is and isn’t instructional design (ID), where ID fits within e-learning development, what ID models are used, types of (good) instructional design (ID) applications, the ID process and storyboarding, tips to make the most out of ID, and pitfalls to avoid, and tools and resources that can help. 9/18/2018

3 What is and isn’t instructional design?
Instructional Design is also referred to as Instructional Systems Design (ISD) or instructional technology. ID is the discipline of maximizing the effectiveness, efficiency and appeal of instruction or learning experiences to its target learners. It’s rooted in education and adult learning principles. ID does not involve content creation (role of SMEs) technical writing (help docs, SOPs), or back-end development and production (designing UI, interactivity or multimedia). 9/18/2018

4 Where does ID fit within e-learning development?
Content creation (new or repurposed) Editorial process (peer reviews, editing and copyediting) Online script creation (SME at work) Storyboarding (ID at work) Production QA Review and revisions Go live Maintenance 9/18/2018

8 What types of instructional design (ID) applications are there?
Education vs. technology-based Medium or format-based Example: Online vs. mobile Complexity of treatment for content Copy/pasting from SME script and formatting into storyboard + Chunking or splitting + Convert SME knowledge checks into interactivity templates + Validate learning objectives and test questions with content + Create new interactive exercises and/or custom interactivity using content and SME input + Address content gaps, flow issues and content organization + Rework learning objectives and test + Work with SME to create cognitive knowledge assessments involving application of information presented (example: case studies) 9/18/2018

9 What is (good) ID process and storyboarding?
Read and re-read SME script and/or source materials Discuss ID approach with SME and product owner Understand the audience Understand the delivery format, system and capabilities Understand multimedia and interactivity templates and custom capabilities Address content integrity before storyboarding (learning objectives, flow, gaps, etc.) Elicit input from SME and production team while storyboarding (SB) Be consistent in ID approach Adhere to style guide Focus on learner involvement, not just “a book on the web” approach Add multimedia and interactivity templates or requests appropriately Flag issues for SME and/or reviewers via comments Revise SB per SME and reviewers feedback 9/18/2018

10 Tips to make the most out of ID, and pitfalls to avoid
Get a good quality instructional designer Referrals Past e-learning work MS degree in ID or ISD Set-up a good production team and process IDs working alongside production perform better than freelance/remote Share actual examples of well-done e-learning courses Set clear expectations ID approach and content treatment Collaboration with SME and production team Set hours allowed per SB Don’t expect IDs to be SMEs If using multiple IDs, set-up a lead person Be ready to switch IDs and consider ID firms Consider rapid authoring tools vs. formal storyboarding Articulate Captivate Lectora 9/18/2018
