2 Today we will: Understand the role of Lexile® levels in determining text complexity. Explore Lexile® levels for Spanish and French texts. Look at research component of CCSS. Look at resources in TeachingBooks.net on the VRC. Review the importance of Bibliographies and Works Cited pages in student work. Have an opportunity to practice using these resources.

3 Let’s talk about Lexile® Levels
Qualitative measures – Levels of meaning or purpose, structure, language conventionality and clarity, and knowledge demands. Quantitative measures – Lexile Word length or frequency and sentence length. Measured by computer software. 6 Research to Build and Present Knowledge
Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation. Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, assess the credibility and accuracy of each source, and integrate the information while avoiding plagiarism. Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. Choose Virtual Reference Collection under Databases. TeachingBooks is under Literature/Language. Click on Advanced Search. Check Foreign-language Resources under Special Collections. Opt for lexile levels and curricular areas (French, Spanish). Search. Scroll through results.

8 Bibliographies and Works Cited
Use the handout to check formatting. EasyBib – web based formatting good for web sites. Use NoodleBib – subscription database (access from Destiny) with many additional features (no advertising, saved accounts, help feature, check for errors, annotations). Set up an account. Students set up an account. Go to Sharing Setup to create account students can use to share their projects with you. Include me in the sharing setup, and I will comment on their citations. It takes some time and some getting used to, but students who use NoodleBib in a number of classes will learn how to cite sources more efficiently and effectively.
