The electron microscope was invented in the 1940s. This microscope uses a beam of electrons to magnify structures up to times their actual size.

There are two basic types of electron microscopes. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) scans the surface of cells to learn their three dimensional shape. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) allows scientists to study the structures contained within a cell.

14 TEM The transmission electron microscope (TEM) is capable of magnifications of 100,000 times. Unlike the scanning electron microscope, which uses reflected electrons, the TEM uses electrons passing through a very thin slice of the specimen. TEMs are especially useful in studying the structure of cells, and in crystallography.
