Book: When I Was Your Age
Reverend Abbott and Those Bloodshot Eyes by Walter Dean Myers First person view – Narrator did not specify his or her name.
2
The Narrator Says: No direct dialogue from the narrator; story written with a “journal” perspective Actions: Played games on the sidewalk, Standing on the sidelines for pranks Thoughts: Enjoyed watching pranks, but never participated in them Others: Others don’t really care or notice him, he just stands off to the sidelines and observes the others
3
Self Concept: The narrator seems to view themselves as somewhat unimportant, but good as a whole. The challenge was choosing not to get involved in the prank. But at the same time, he didn’t try to stop it either.
4
Theme: I think the author wrote this as a way to talk about how standing back isn’t always the best choice. Although he didn’t directly do anything to prank the Reverend, he also didn’t do anything to stop it. Which could’ve saved his job.
5
Literary Craft: Description of small things that really help paint the picture, like how he spends a full paragraph explaining a childhood street game they played The whole journalistic first person perspective is really interesting
