The Black Cat Black: (adjective) a color lacking hue  and brightness; absorbing light without reflecting any of the rays composing it; characterized by absence of light;  enveloped in darkness. Cat: (noun) a small domesticated carnivore Edgar Allan Poe Black: gloomy; pessimistic; dismal: deliberately; harmful; inexcusable: boding ill; sullen or hostile; threatening: Based on the descriptor “black”, the reader could infer that the cat is not only black in color, but also in demeanor.

2 Précis In the gothic short story “The Black Cat”, Edgar Allan Poe asserts that human beings exist in a state of dichotomy—where good battles evil. Poe supports his assertion through multiple literary and rhetorical techniques: flashback, characterization, conflicts, symbols, irony. His purpose is to reveal the internal conflict within the main character in order to unveil all mankind’s darkest traits to the audience. The 1800s to modern audience, intrigued by the informative, intelligent and remorseful main character, begins to fear for the main character’s wife as he reveals his duplicitous nature throughout the tale.

3 Mode/Pattern Narration and Description Poe utilizes a classic short story plotline: Exposition (introducing the main character—a disparate and desperate man, setting—the cell of a jail, and main problem—he will die tomorrow by hanging), rising action (containing compelling and disturbing complications in the narrator’s story), climax (the moment the narrator realizes the magnitude of his heinous crime—his slaying if his wife), and denouement (a quick conclusion with resolve—the police discover his crime). Evidence: “My immediate purpose is to place before the world, plainly, succinctly, and without comment, a series of mere household events. In their consequences, these events have terrified —have tortured —have destroyed me. Yet I will not attempt to expound them. …Hereafter, perhaps, some intellect may be found which will reduce my phantasm to the common-place —some intellect more calm, more logical, and far less excitable than my own, which will perceive, in the circumstances I detail with awe, nothing more than an ordinary succession of very natural causes and effects.”

4 Point of View 1st Person Narrator Voice
By creating a character who narrates his own story in order to explain to the audience the simple series of events leading to his current situation, Poe produces an Informative, intelligent, and remorseful voice for his main character . Evidence: “Mad indeed would I be to expect it, in a case where my very senses reject their own evidence. Yet, mad am I not —and very surely do I not dream.” Throughout the text, the narrator remains focused in telling his tale: He employs logical and emotional evidence which illustrate his intellect and exemplify his guilt. Poe employs a first person point of view for this short story. Evidence: “For the most wild, yet most homely narrative which I am about to pen, I neither expect nor solicit belief.” An effective point of view, it allows the reader to witness the internal conflicts which arise in the devolving main character.

5 Flashback—Narrator Introduction
In the first sentence the narrator introduces the mode of the story (a narrative) and that he will (the future tense) write it. He notes the future (tomorrow he will die) and present situation (today he will unburden his conscience). “FOR the most wild, yet most homely narrative which I am about to pen, I neither expect nor solicit belief. Mad indeed would I be to expect it, in a case where my very senses reject their own evidence. Yet, mad am I not —and very surely do I not dream. But to- morrow I die, and to-day I would unburthen my soul.” “From my infancy I was noted…” Returns to the past to explain his current situation

6 Characterization—Main Character/ Narrator
Universal Conflict— Internal— Man v/s Himself Characterization—Main Character/ Narrator Analysis: He struggles internally between that which is good and that which is evil within his heart, shamefully acknowledging his growing propensity to commit evil (sin). Good “From my infancy I was noted for the docility and humanity of my disposition.” “My tenderness of heart was even so conspicuous as to make me the jest of my companions.” “I married early, and was happy to find in my wife a disposition not uncongenial with my own.” Evil “…my general temperament and character — through the instrumentality of the Fiend Intemperance —had (I blush to confess it) experienced a radical alteration for the worse.” “One morning, in cool blood, I slipped a noose about its neck and hung it to the limb of a tree;…” “Goaded, by the interference, into a rage more than demoniacal, I withdrew my arm from her grasp and buried the axe in her brain.”

7 Universal Conflicts—External
“Upon the fourth day of the assassination, a party of the police came, very unexpectedly, into the house, and proceeded again to make rigorous investigation of the premises.” man v/s society The police represent the law (moral code)—he has murdered man v/s nature The cat possesses the ability to goad the narrator into shame, fear, anger. “My next step was to look for the beast which had been the cause of so much wretchedness; for I had, at length, firmly resolved to put it to death.”

8 Symbols—The Black Cats
Evidence: “In speaking of his intelligence, my wife, who at heart was not a little tinctured with superstition, made frequent allusion to the ancient popular notion, which regarded all black cats as witches in disguise.” “Pluto —this was the cat's name —was my favorite pet and playmate” Analysis: the man's wife refers to the superstition that Satan and witches assume the form of black cats. For those who believe, they are symbols of bad luck, death, sorcery, witchcraft, and the spirits of the dead. Appropriately, the narrator calls his cat, Pluto, who in Greek and Roman mythology was the god of the dead and the ruler of the underworld (allusion).

9 Evidence: “…, through the mere phrenzy of bravado, I rapped heavily, with a cane which I held in my hand, upon that very portion of the brick-work behind which stood the corpse of the wife of my bosom.” Irony Analysis: Expecting that he will not be caught and charged with murder due to his clever and ingenious way of disposing of his wife’s corpse, he self-assuredly taps on the wall, and as he is unaware of the cat’s presence therein, the cat begins his grotesque howl and he gives himself away.

10 Mood Evidence: “But may God shield and deliver me from the fangs of the Arch- Fiend! No sooner had the reverberation of my blows sunk into silence than I was answered by a voice from within the tomb! —by a cry, at first muffled and broken, like the sobbing of a child, and then quickly swelling into one long, loud, and continuous scream, utterly anomalous and inhuman —a howl — a wailing shriek, half of horror and half of triumph, such as might have arisen only out of hell, conjointly from the throats of the damned in their agony and of the demons that exult in the damnation.” Analysis: Due to the descriptively dark, horror-filled diction and the contrast in movement from the “silence” to the increasing volume and form of the cat’s howl, Poe produces a feeling of fear in the reader.
