Plot Chart Climax: Conflict: Exposition: Denouement: Rising Action:
The main problem is introduced Rising Action: Events leading to climax Denouement: The resolution, when the main conflict is resolved Exposition: Characters, setting and mood are established Falling Action: Events leading to the resolution Climax: Turning point when the reader knows how the conflict will be resolved

Setting The time and place in which the story takes place.

Conflict The main problem of the story
Does not always have to be a bad thing There are 4 types - character vs. character - character vs. self - character vs. nature - character vs. society

Point of View The method in which the author tells the story (Who is telling the story?) 1st Person – the narrator is a character in the story 3rd Person – the narrator is not a character in the story Limited – the story follows one main character in the story Omniscient – the story follows many/all characters in the story

Tone & Mood Tone – the writer’s attitude toward his/her subject
Mood – the feeling the writer creates for the readers
