War Horse Conflict Theme Protagonist (good guy) Antagonist (bad guy)-
Joey(narrator) Antagonist (bad guy)- There isn’t necessarily a bad guy, but it could be the war because it harmed Joey in many ways. It could also be the German soldiers because they were hurting others and starting wars. The theme of my book is being able to adapt (adaptation) to new things, having bravery, loyalty, and friendship. Joey had to adapt in many ways . He was first a farm horse and after that he had to adapt to be a war horse and then a cart horse. He then was a war horse once again and at the end a farm horse. He also had to have bravery in order to survive all the events that happened through out his life. War Horse

Exposition: The exposition of my book is located on page 1 and page 5.
The narrator/protagonist is introduced on page 5. The protagonist is a red, almost red bay horse named Joey. He has a white cross on his nose and he has a white stocks on each of his leg. At the beginning of the book War Horse the setting takes place in hilly fields and dark, damp stables with rats that scampered along the beams above Joey’s head. The setting takes place on the Narracott’s farm . At the beginning of the story Joey, the horse, is bought by a drunk farmer, Albert’s Dad (pages 2). After two years of cheerfulness and happiness with Albert, Joey was sold to Captain James Nicholls (the British’s army) without Albert’s approval. During that moment Albert promised Joey, “ I’ll find you again, you old silly, wherever you are, I’ll find you, Joey.” (located on pages 28-30) What is exposition? This is where characters(protagonist and sometimes antagonist) are introduced. This is also where the setting is introduced. Although the setting may change through out the story ,yet the reader has to get a clear and vivid picture of it at the beginning of the story (exposition).

Rising Action What is rising action?
The first rising action event is when Captain Nicholls [ The person who bought Joey from his first owner (Albert)] dies (located on page 46). This event is important because it caused suspense when Joey almost died along with Captain Nicholls. If Joey hadn’t kept galloping then, he would had also gotten shot. He would had caused the troop to loose the battle since he along with Captain Nicholls were leading the battle. The second rising action event is when Joey and Trooper Warren (Joey’s new rider) along with Topthorn (a huge sleek black horse) and Captain Stewart were captured by the opposing team (the foe), the Germans(This event is located on the pages 60-63). This event is important because it caused suspense while reading the book and all of the sudden Joey along with Topthorn were separated from those that they love and those that love them. It grabbed my attention because all of the sudden they were surrounded by the Germans. The third rising action event is when Joey gets stuck in the wire (located on pages ), causing him to get tetanus. It caused him to lose lots of blood and not be able to put pressure on his leg (his wounded leg). Joey returns to the British troop and almost died from tetanus. Since, most horses didn’t survive the disease, Major Martin (the veterinarian) had decided to tell Sergeant Thunder to kill Joey. During this event, Albert (Joey’s first owner) had already volunteered to join the Veterinary Corps (page 125 ). He had recognized Joey after many years (page 130). Since, he interfered Joey was lucky that he didn’t get killed. This event is important because Joey and Albert were finally together once again. Rising Action What is rising action? This is where one or more of characters act to resolve the conflict and complications develop. It also contains the series of events that build suspense and an interest in the story. Usually there are three events during the rising action that lead up to the climax.

The climax is located on pages 151-157
During the climax Joey and all the other war horses have to be sold by auction because the English can’t take them back to Britain with them. This meant that Albert couldn’t keep Joey. Sergeant Thunder had the brilliant idea of collecting as much money as they could between all the soldiers, so they could all help to buy Joey Still the price moved up. “ At twenty-five, twenty-six. At twenty-seven. At twenty-seven I’m bid…” But the sergeant was shacking his head know, his eyes looked down and acknowledged defeat. (page156) “Twenty-eight,” came a voice from among the buyers, and I saw a white –haired old man leaning heavily on his stick, shuffle slowly forward through the buyers until he stood in front of them (Emilie’s grandfather). “I’m bidding twenty eight of your English pounds, and I’ll keep bid for so long and so high as I need to, advise you sir, advise you not to try to outbid me. For this horse I will pay one hundred English pounds if I must do. No one will have this horse except me. This is my Emilie’s ( the girl that cared for Joey and Topthorn when they were captured) horse. Its hers by right.” (pages ) The people could see the sadness on Sergeant Thunder and the soldiers along with Albert because they didn’t have enough money to buy Joey. Climax What is climax? It is the part you have been waiting for, the main character overcomes his / her fear.

Falling Action What is falling action?
The falling action is located on pages It occurred after Emilie's grandfather had bought Joey. Major Martin and Sergeant Thunder had spoken to Emilie’s grandfather about the love Albert has towards Joey and how he raised and tamed him. Emilie’s grandfather explained to them how he and Joey met and how much Joey and Topthorn meant to Emilie. He explained how he went looking auction to auction and never found Topthorn and just barely found Joey. He also told them the promise he made Emilie before she died. She made him promise that he would find the two horse and would care for them for the rest of his days. At one point something must have happened that made him touch his heart. He told them that he was getting old and wouldn’t be able to work with Joey. “ … And if I remember Joey well, and I do, he loves to work, doesn’t he not?...” said Emilie’s grandfather. He told them that like any other farmer( he was a farmer) he couldn’t afford to just give away the horse. A farmer has to live, but he would sell Joey for only one English penny and a promise that Albert would tell the story of his granddaughter Emilie, and how she cared for Joey and Topthorn when they went to live with them. What is falling action? This is where the story ties up all his loose ends.

Resolution The resolution is located on pages 164-165.
The resolution is when Joey goes to live on the Narracott’s farm. It is also when Joey explains how his life and Albert’s life went on after the war. What is resolution? This is “the last breath” of any story. We see how the protagonist has responded to the central conflict in the climax. This is the happily ever after or happily never after.
