Paraphrasing Write It In Your Own Words
2
A paraphrase is… Your own rendition of essential information and ideas expressed by someone else, presented in a new form. One legitimate way (when documented) to borrow from a source

Example #1 “The Antarctic is the vast source of cold on our planet, just as the sun is the source of our heat, and it exerts tremendous control on our climate” (“Captain Cousteau” 17). Both the sun, which supplies the earth’s heat, and the Antarctic, which supplies much of the earth’s cold, have a substantial impact on the earth’s climate (“Captain Cousteau” 17).

Example #2 “The flapper was born in the twenties, and with her bobbed hair and short skirts, she symbolized, perhaps more than anyone or anything else, America’s break with the past” (Yancey 25). One of the best examples of the anti-traditional trend was the young flappers, women who rebelled against custom by cutting off their hair and shortening their skirts (Yancey 25).

Example #3 “One study concluded that wearing a bike helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent. In an accident, a bike helmet absorbs the shock and cushions the head” (“Bike Helmets” 348). By cushioning and protecting the head upon impact, a helmet can reduce accidental injury by as much as 85% (“Bike Helmets” 348).

Example #4 “Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is the probable reason why so few engage in it” (Ford 467). Thinking requires more effort than most people are willing to put forth (Ford 467).

Example #5 “Thoughts engender thought. Place one idea on paper, another will follow it, and still another, until you have written a page…Learn to think, and you will learn to write” (Sala 78). Putting your thoughts down on paper help generate further understanding on a topic. Thinking and writing go hand in hand (Sala 78).
