2. לאוטה , לוּט או קַתְרוֹס - כלי מיתר שהתפתח מהעוד הערבי (למעשה שיבוש של שמו הכולל את ה' הידיעה בערבית - אל־עוד). אף על פי שצורתם החיצונית של שני הכלים דומה, הלאוטה בנויה מעץ שונה ומנוגנת בסגנון שונה מהעוד, ולכן המצלול שלה שונה לגמרי. בניגוד לעוד המנוגן בעזרת מפרט ומתפקד ככלי מלודי, ללאוטה יש סריגים לרוחב צווארה והיא מנוגנת בעזרת האצבעות, דבר ההופך אותה לכלי
שיכול להפיק פוליפוניה (נגינת
מספר קולות בו־זמנית) ואקורדים.

3. This is a replica of a lute by Hans Frei, which is now exhibit in the Collection of Ancient Musical Instruments at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien. The replica was made by Lawrence K. Brown, Luthier of Asheville, North Carolina, in 1999, based on published diagrams of the museum piece. (During the Baroque era the Frei lute was upgraded by replacing the original neck and pegbox with more modern components. The replica is a reconstruction of the original Renaissance form of the instrument.

4. הלאוטה הגיעה לאירופה בימי הביניים ונעשתה שם פופולרית בתקופת הרנסאנס ככלי סולו וככלי מלווה לזמרים והרכבים. מספר המיתרים של הלאוטה השתנה במשך הזמן, אולם נותר תמיד זוגי. בסביבות שנת 1500 הייתה נפוצה לאוטה בעלת ששה זוגות מיתרים, ובתקופתו של יוהן סבסטיאן באך (עד 1750) הייתה נפוצה הלאוטה בעלת 13 זוגות מיתרים.

בטבולטורה ללאוטה הרישום התבסס על אותיות האלפבית או על מספרים. מיתר פתוח ללא אצבעות על צוואר הלאוטה מוספר 0 או סומן באות a ואצבע על הסריג הראשון באותו מיתר על השחיף מוספרה 1 או סומן באות b, וכך הלאה. הרישום הריתמי צוין מעל לטבולטורה. ללאוטה עם 6 מיתרים, למשל, הייתה טבולטורה עם 6 קווים, ועל הקווים נכתבו האותיות או המספרים.
באמצע המאה ה-18 השתנה הטעם המוזיקלי והלאוטה נזנחה. כיום נפוצה המנדולינה, כלי שהתפתח מהלאוטה. כלי זה אופייני למוזיקה עממית במספר ארצות באירופה, כגון אירלנד.
יש המשתמשים במילה "לאוטה" כשם כללי לכל כלי מיתר בעל צוואר ותיבת תהודה.
