Modern I Vocabulary

List 1 Alignment: Proper anatomical placement.
Arabesque: A position of the body supported on one leg with the other extended behind the body with a straight leg. Battement: A large brush of the leg to the front, side, or back of the body and returns to the supporting leg. Parallel: No rotation in the hip joint resulting in the knee and toe facing forward. Passe’: ‘to pass;’ placing or passing the working foot near (on, above, or below) the knee of the supporting leg. Pirouette: A full rotation of the body on the ball of the foot with the other foot at a Passe position (toe to knee). Plié: A bending of the knees Relevé: To rise Tendue: The action of sliding the foot on the floor to a pointed toe. Turnout: rotation of the leg that comes from the hip, resulting in the knee and foot to turn outward/away from the body.

List 2 Chassé: A gallop, gliding, or chasing step in which one foot is kept in advance of the other. Gesture: A movement of the body or a part of the body used to express an idea or emotion. Such movement could include a wave, handshake, head nod, shaking of the fist, etc. Ritual gestures may include gestures that are part of ceremonies or functional gestures such as brushing teeth or washing clothes. Improvisation: Movement that is created spontaneously, occurring within free or highly structured environments, but always with an element of chance. Provides the dancer with the opportunity to bring together elements quickly and requires focus and concentration. Levels: The height of the dancer in relation to the floor. Levels in space are referred to as low, middle, and high. Locomotor movement: Movement that travels from place to place, usually identified by weight transference such as: Hop (from one foot to the same) Jump (from two feet to two, two to one or from one foot to two) Leap ( from one foot to the other) Walk, run, prance, gallop, skip, slide (chasse)

List 2 Continued Non-locomotor/Axial movement: Any movement that does not travel, but uses the available space in any direction or movement organized around the axis of the body (axial movement). Bending, twisting, stretching, and swinging are examples of axial movement. Pathway: The path traced as movement proceeds through space. A pathway may be either on the floor or through the air and is constructed of straight and/or curved lines. Phrase: A brief sequence of related movements that have a sense of rhythmic completion. Spot: Focusing on a specific point while turning, to avoid dizziness Supporting leg/foot: leg or foot that is supporting the weight of the body; can be bent or straight, in parallel or turned out Warm-up: Movements and/or movement phrases designed to raise the core body temperature, move the body through a preparatory range of movement, and bring the mind into focus for the dance. Proper warm-ups will help to decrease the risk of injury.

List 3 Abstract Movement- Movements that are symbolic of gestures or that create meaning. (They are NOT literal gestures) Choreographer-A person who creates dances. Choreography-The art of making dances. Degage’-A brush of the foot off of the floor Echo-Repeating a movement created by another dancer. Elements of Dance-Created by Rudolf Laban the include Space, Time, Energy, Weight, and Flow. Manipulation-To change

List 3 Cont’d Mirror-Facing a dancer, moving in unison, copying movements as if you are a reflection. Release-Using breath to initiate movement. Shape-Body stillness in space (twisted, curved, angular, flat, levels, etc.) Suspend-Rising and releasing (rollercoaster) Swing-A circular motion caused by an initial release. Transitions-Movements that connect shapes or other movements. Working leg-The leg that executes the movement(s)
