1 Kagman High School Million Dollar Scholars

2 So many problems are rooted in poverty
Shorter life (reduced quality of life) Much higher rates of preventable disease Younger average age of first pregnancy Higher crime rates Higher likelihood of addiction to alcohol, tobacco, and drugs Worse at everything related to education Introduce this slide as a paln to combat poverty. -Toshiba-User

3 SAT Scores by household income
The idea that if a student is smart enough then they will get scholarships is not true. SAT scores measure income, not aptitude. -Toshiba-User

4 Consider the problems of going to a 4-year university
Cost About $1500 per student just to get to college Timing All financial aid comes AFTER the student has arrived. No Pell Grants for travel, CNMI and SHEFFA come too late to help with transportation Family Little emotional support Often from pre-banking households it is a matter of timing. only 15% of our population has college degrees. That means 85% of our kids families dont know how to support them emotionally much less financially. Less likely to have a credit card to pay for application fees Pre-banking cashing checks at poker arcade.

5 Kagman High School We make Scholars - 2016
This was our experiment year. We started with a group of kids who had great grades. We grouped these kids together in higher rigor courses like AP LA and CAlculus, We also encouraged them to apply to schools together in groups so they could fight homesickness as a team. Let me tell you how our experiment went.

6 So how did we do in our experiment?
6 Gates Millennium Scholars (likely more than any other high school in America) Over 2.5 Million in scholarship offers 23 students attending 4-year universities in the mainland , 1 in 5 of our graduating class $44,500 raised to pay for plane tickets, pre-college expenses, and set-up support (sheets and towels). 15 of our 23 are grouped with other MD$ Mr. G awarded KHS Teacher of the Year, MyPros Young Professional of the Year. Out of the 23 students in the group, all 100% of them are still in school today. All of them have reported that they will continue to attend their second year. Please know, we have wasted no funds: 100% of all contributions went to support our scholars in the following ways: Transportation $25,472.26, Scholar Support $14,370, Applications and fees/books $4,194, Christmas Care package $ Our success is because of YOUR community participation. Because of you and your investment in our kids. Mr G met President trump last week.

7 Let me introduce you to Grace Iriarte 2017 Million Dollar Scholar

8 We are looking for sponsors to help our scholars exit poverty and enter college
I wish i could be here today to say we met our fundraising goal. We have a total of 23 again for this years send off. Each kid needs 1500 to get there. I am in need of six more plane tickets to get my kids to their end destination to redeem their scholarships We are looking for a few more companies to help sponsor these six remaining scholars.
