Do Now: Apply the concept of imperialism to the following scenarios on your handout.

Imperialism A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. Many countries became involved in Imperialism to become a powerful country.

Imperialism Cuba tried to break free from being owned & controlled by Spain for over 20 years. Each time the Cubans tried to fight Spain they were defeated and Spain kept control of Cuba. American businesses in Cuba grew & as more Americans worked in Cuba, they got caught up in the fight between Cubans and Spanish as Cuba continued to fight to become free of Spanish rule.

Imperialism A major factor in the shift in American foreign policy toward imperialism in the late 19th century was the need for overseas markets for increased industrial and agricultural production. By the 1890’s, the United States was bursting with a new sense of power generated by an increase in population, wealth, & industrial production.

Components of Imperialism: Belief in Darwinian Struggle-Social Darwinism
A belief that the world's nations were engaged in a Darwinian struggle for survival and that countries that failed to compete were doomed to decline This idea also contributed to a new assertiveness on the part of the United States.

People sent by a church into an area to carry on specific activities, as educational or hospital work. In addition, Missionaries, are strongly in favor of a program or set of principles, etc., Their goal is to try and persuade or convert others.

Gallery Walk In your groups, you will visit 7 different countries & analyze a variety of primary and secondary source documents. * I will be making various check points to conference with each of you, during that time you will either-ask me a question that you have, or you will tell me something that you have learned* For example: How a country acquired & when?
