Provide links, quotes, etc. No ebay. Amazon OK. First stop is my desk, I’ll approve it, kick it back for more info, etc. as appropriate. 12 Same Day

13 Uconn Project Management
Project Management Tools Used Take advantage of the tools discussed: Project Statement Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) RACI chart Scheduling software (MS Project) Risk cube Design notebook Bill of Material Closing report Pugh Charts They will greatly improve your success rate!!

14 How Can Pugh Charts Help?
Problem Definition Statement WBS Structure Research Candidate Solutions Pugh Chart Initial Analysis, Evaluate Down select Most Promising Solutions

15 Pugh Charts- What are they?
Dr. Stuart Pugh, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Scotland studied the way product and process development projects were performed. Decision matrix ["pros" vs. "cons" lists] evaluating multiple options against each other often in relation to a baseline option. Evaluate ideas lists of characteristics judging each idea - individual criteria creates a more objective selection process.

16 Pugh Charts - Construction
Create a Table list all of the project criteria (requirements) at a given level of detail in one column/row.   Define Criteria weighted by importance arbitrarily laid out in whatever particular order suits those making the evaluations For each criteria, decide if the option the same (0) better (+) worse (-) than your datum Tally the results to determine which idea is best.

17 Pugh Charts Also see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decision_matrix
Datum Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 Evaluation Criteria Battery-Operated Solar Phase-change Water Bath cost + reliability - accuracy (x2) maintenance safety ease of use Total -3 +2 -1 Also see:

18 Pugh Charts – Customize to Your Need
May want to weight some of the criteria more heavily safety may be more important than portability Use a weighting scale (1,3,5) to high light differences Can also use a score of 1 – 10 vs 0,+,- Clearly explain you scoring method !!

21 Simulation is a key part of Engineering
Does it make sense Agrees with the physics Meets the Boundary Conditions Numerical results What do results mean? Communication What Decisions are made

22 Unit Problems are Simpler problems that:
Demonstrate you know how to run the software compare results to known solutions Simple experiments to generate important information Breaks a complicated problem into simpler parts - analytical and experimental Help develop your approach Builds confidence In your ability to simulate the more complicated problem

23 ME56 Zachry Potential Unit Problems Problem

24 ME42 Stanadyne Potential Unit Problems Problem

25 ME32 Paramount Machine Potential Unit Problems Problem

26 Unit Problems can Be Simple Experiments

27 Unit Problems can Be Simple Experiments

28 Unit Problem Assignment
4 – 6 page document (in the box!) Picture describing your project Identify the Unit problems Show and EXPLAIN some results Compare to known solutions Due October 18

29 Unit Problem Assignment
Show the “unit problems” that you need to understand and be able to run successfully in Ansys or other codes to be able to solve your sponsor problem Picture of Sponsor Problem Q h Flow in a pipe (laminar Turbulent) Indenter or Pressure Or a cylinder Cantilever beam Stress deflection 1D Heat Transfer

30 Oral 1 Oral 1: Oct. 4, Oct. 9, Oct. 11 Your group is assigned a day
Your sponsor and faculty advisor are invited You will hand in a hard copy of your slides at the presentation For Oral 1, everyone must use the same template

31 Oral 1 Before your date, you will upload the PPTX file to meseniordesign.engr.uconn.edu folder Must be PPTX format, you will not be allowed to use Google Sheets on the day of Your slides must be approved by your sponsor

32 Oral 1 \\meseniordesign\ \Oral Presentations\Oral 1\October 4

33 Oral 1 Slides Slide 1 Title Slide 2 Sponsor Slide 3 Project Statement
Slide 4 Work Breakdown Structure Slide 5 RACI Chart Slide 6 Schedule (high level) Slide 7 Schedule (screenshot of MS project) Slide 8 Summary Slide 9 Assessment

34 Peer Assessment – Last Slide
Peer Assessment - QR Code Team is executing to plan (schedule Presented results look encouraging High probability they will meet the project objectives B. Team is having some problems in executing ,but They know the issues and have a plan to recover. Moderate probability they will meet project objectives. C. Team is having serious problems in executing. No plan to recover Low probability they will meet project objectives

35 Oral 1 Oral 1 Schedule is on he Web Page Attendance:
Attend any sessions you want besides your own You are expected to attend minimum 50% of the presentations (16 = 66(.5x.5))

36 Last Comments Effort is necessary BUT You are judged on results
