Engineering, Science, and Society
2
Starter Essential question:
How does technology affect our society and the natural world?
3
Tick your brains I wear a big hat with a long tail. I am dark in the day and bright at night. What am I?
4
Questions/Answers: 1. Is the lamp a technology?
2. When was it invented? 3. Who inveted the lamp? 4. Which problem did it solve? 5. What did they use before inventing the light bulb? Did it have the same shape? 6. Predict: What are the principles and knowledge that were considered to ensure the functioning of the lamp? 7. Extend: would the characteristics of the light bulb be development throughout time? Justify your point of view.

National Geographic Published on Feb 24, 2015 SUBSCRIBE 6.5M Video technology and science converge on an active volcano in Vanuatu, where explorer Sam Cossman operated camera-mounted drones to capture high-definition images of the spectacular
6
Identify the evidence in each case to determine the discipline used.
1- Scientists test and compare the physical (melting point) and chemical properties (flammability) of available substances to choose the best kind to withstand high temperatures. (science/physics/chemistry and math) 2- Designing suits to withstand high temperatures (engineering) 3- Estimate/predict the activity of the volcano (science/geology) 4- The volcanist uses a thermometer to estimate the temperature of the lava and a suit to protect him from heat. (science, math and engineering)
7
Checking for understanding: (5 min)
Write a sentence to explain the relationship between engineering, science and society.
8
Who am I? Group 1: I am used to observe things that cannot be seen by the human naked eyes but I have many eyes. Group 2: I am used as a container to mix chemicals, I have a neck and a body. Group 3: I am tall like a giraffe but I have numbers all along my neck to show the volume. Group 4: I have to bear the weights over me and present it as numbers. Group 5:
9
Task: fill in the table with the adequate data
Tool Use POSSIBLE SOCIETAL NEEDS Scientific principles used to design Explain how would not having this tool affect scientific investigations
10
Extend your thinking Explain any shortcoming and suggest possible improvement(DOK3).
11
Objective (s): Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution.
12
Starter: Recall the influence of societal needs on science and engineering practices that resulted in the development of technology.
13
Warm up: plan A Ask students to build a tower from plastic cups and can hold the greater number of science notebooks.
14
Checking prerequisites:
The teacher demonstrates a simple problem from the daily life such as fitting a paper(worksheet) into a copybook and have students discuss the following answers. 1- What should be the criteria of the paper so that it fits into the copybook? 2- What is the constraint? 3- Suggest a solution to this problem
15
Group 1: designing a new tablet
16
Group 2: designing
17
Group 2: designing a new battery-powered string lights to use outside
18
Group 3: designing a hoverboard
20
Objective: I can define engineering problems by considering how technology might improve life quality.
21
Starter Recall: the importance of defining the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful design solution. Role-play: have students select a sense to give up. For 5 minutes, have students try to continue their learning without using the sense. Relate this experience to the effect it had on their quality of life.
22
Activity: (30 min) Each group will:
- search and decide on a technology developed to improve life quality by solving health problems such as: Diabetes, kidney failure, vision impairment, paralysis, decreased mobility, body parts loss. - Determine the Criteria and constraints of the suggested/developed design solutions. - Give an example of a Personal experience to show the impact of technology on their lives. - Prepare a presentation to communicate their findings with the other groups
23
UAE culture: premium technologies in UAE that improved life quality
24
Engineering Design Process
Objectives: I can apply the engineering design process to find successful solutions to a design problem.
