England Seizes the Dutch Colonies
1497- John Cabot claims all land b/t Newfoundland and Florida for England Considered Dutch colony of New Netherland to be intruders on English soil Mad about Dutch reselling Virginia tobacco 1664- King Charles II gave brother James (Duke of York) a grant w/ New Netherland in it! Sent warships to make sure wouldn’t be a problem New Netherland’s Governor Peter Stuyvesant Colorful, peg-legged, military hero that ruled for 17 years Land diverse, people too To fix colony’s $ problems, he raises taxes

New York and New Jersey New Jersey English took control in 1664.
Lesson 3 Main Idea 1 The English created New York and New Jersey from former Dutch territory. New Jersey English took control in 1664. The colony occupied land between the Hudson and Delaware rivers. It had a diverse population, including Dutch, Swedes, Finns, and Scots. New York Dutch founded New Netherland in as fur trading post. Rename it after James after the Duke of York New Amsterdam was center of fur trade. Peter Stuyvesant led the colony from English captured colony in 1664 and renamed it New York. Quakers often imprisoned, tortured, or hung

Penn (Jr.) granted colony b/c Charles II owes his father $81,000 Admiral William Penn Dies in 1670 Debt cancelled with land grant Wants to name it Penn’s Land (for Dad) Kings council declines because he is a Quaker Names it Sylvania (woods) King Charles II renames Pennsylvania Meaning “Penn’s Woods” in honor of his friend Founded By… ?
