1 Drill: Cats in borneo activity on desks
TURN IN OCEAN ACIDIFICATION LAB TURN IN MEDIA MATTERS IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY

2 Objective Students will review ecological vocabulary in order to gain a deeper understanding of the inner workings of ecosystems.

3 Agenda Read over Food-Web Activity (highlight key vocab)
Food-web card game Lab questions Ecosystem services HW: Make sure notes are complete for Tuesday Next Quiz: Chapter 3 and 4 – October 7th (B-day) &10th (A-day) UNIT TEST: October 14th (B-day) & 17th (A-day)

4 Drill: Would you estimate that most of your daily caloric intake comes from a high trophic level or from a low trophic level? Explain your answer. HAVE NOTES OUT TO CHECK TURN IN MEDIA MATTERS IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY

5 Objective Students will be able to complete a lab in order to distinguish the amount of energy that is required to support their own diet.

6 Agenda Re-do/Re-take Info Eating at a lower trophic level activity
Next Quiz: Chapter 3 and 4 – October 7th (B- day) &10th (A-day) UNIT TEST: October 14th (B-day) & 17th (A- day)

7 Re-do/Re-take Dates Tuesday morning: 7:15-7:45 (3103)
For APES, I will be available at these times: Tuesday morning: 7:15-7:45 (3103) Thursday morning: 7:15-7:45 (3103) Tuesday after school: 2:15-2:45 (3105) Lunches – any day, any lunch (3105) Going forward, you must let me know ahead of time what day, and time you will be coming.

9 Trophic Pyramid

10 What are trophic levels?
What is the rule of 10%? How are these related?

11 Drill: What is the difference between net primary productivity and gross primary productivity? Use your notes, or your activity from last class to help you answer.

12 Agenda Quiz Quick Notes of Productivity Part 2 of NPP Lab
Explanation of Formal Lab Report for NPP Lab Begin evolution HW: Read/Notes Chapter 5 Study for Unit Test (10/17/16) DATE CHANGE: Next Media Matters Due Nov. 1st

13 Types of Productivity:
1. Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) 2. Net Primary Productivity (NPP) 3. Net Ecosystem Production (NEP)

14 Gross Primary Productivity (GPP)
Rate of photosynthesis among ecosystem’s producers Gross primary productivity (GPP) is a measure of the total amount of chemical energy (glucose) created from the sunlight an area receives.

15 Net Primary Productivity (NPP)
What is left over for the consumers to use after the producers use some of the total biomass for respiration Measured in units of energy of biomass available to consumers in an area over a given time NPP = GPP – Respiration of Plants

16 The Earth is Only 2% Efficient
This is only approximately 1% the radiation received from the sun! What happens to the other 99% of energy?

17 Albedo The ability of some areas of the earth to reflect solar radiation back out of the atmosphere

18 Why Care About Productivity?
Productivity can help us measure: 1. Ecosystem services and biosphere production AND 2. Human impact on the biosphere

19 Factors Affecting NPP Low TEMPERATURE High High NPP Low
Low Precipitation High High NPP Low Low NUTRIENTS High High NPP Low

20 Our Grass Seed Known NPP for Fescue Grass Seed is 58 g/cm2/year
We will compare what you all measured over 10 days.

21 PROBLEM: Identify the Net Primary Productivity of an environment specifically grass.
HYPOTHESIS: If fescue seeds are planted and grow for 10 days, then the NPP of the grass will be lower than the known NPP of fescue plants, g/m2/year, because of the limited amount of energy that a window light can input into the system as compared to natural sunlight.
