Daedalus and Icarus Escape again Peter Strelzyk and Gunter Wetzel’s escape from Communist East Germany in a hot air balloon sounds like the myth of Daedalus and Icarus. In 1979 they and their families, who were desperate for freedom, flew over the Berlin Wall. For two years, Strelzyk and Wetzel had secretly put everything together. Then they lifted off and sailed 8,200 feet above the cruel barbed wire and concrete wall. When they landed on the other side, they were in free West Germany. They were like Daedalus and Icarus in the sky again, but this time the dangerous escape was a success for all.

Night Crossing A great escape happened the night Peter Strelzyk and Gunter Wetzel crossed from East to West Germany in a hot air balloon. They flew it over the twelve- foot high barrier known as the “Iron Curtain.” It was dangerous. They feared that neighbors would turn them in to the police, and there was the danger of fire. Secretly, their wives sewed sheets and curtains together for the balloon, while Strelzyk and Wetzel built the basket, a flame thrower, and a gas burner. These eight Germans, who risked their lives to flee from Communism, crossed into freedom one great night.
