1 Learning Target: I can identify parts of a circle.
Circles Learning Target: I can identify parts of a circle.

2 Learning Target: I can identify parts of a circle.
Supplies needed per pair of students: 2 paper plates 4 pipe cleaners(2 gold) 1 whole puncher Assortment of different Markers 1 Ruler

3 Learning Target: I can identify parts of a circle.
Consider the shape of the paper plate. Discuss with your neighbor facts you know about the shape of the paper plate. What is the outside edge of this shape called? What is the formula for the outside of this shape? How many degrees are found within this shape?

4 Learning Target: I can identify parts of a circle.
Step 1) Fold the paper plate in half. Step 2) Discuss with your partner facts you know about the shape of the folded paper plate. Step 3) Label the outside of the folded paper plate as the Semicircle and 180°.

5 Learning Target: I can identify parts of a circle.
Step 4) Unfold the paper plate. Step 5) On the non labeled side, use the ruler and draw a straight line across the center of the plate. Step 6) Using different colors, label the endpoints of the line as A and B. Label the center as C and label the line 𝐴𝐵 as the Diameter.

6 Learning Target: I can identify parts of a circle.
Step 7) Label the following: 1. The endpoints C and D as the Radius. 2. The endpoints B and D as the Chord. 3. The endpoints A and D ( <180°) as the Minor Arc. 4. The endpoints A and D ( >180°) as the Major Arc.

7 Learning Target: I can identify parts of a circle.
Step 8) Use the whole puncher to: 1. Punch 3 single wholes into the paper plate on the outer edge of the plate. 2. The first whole should be placed 1 inch on the right of point A. 3. The second whole should be placed 3 inches apart from the first whole. 4. The third whole should be placed 7 inches from the second whole.

8 Learning Target: I can identify parts of a circle.
Step 9) Label the following: 1. The first whole punched as point F. 2. The second whole punched as point G. 3. The third whole punched as point E.

9 Learning Target: I can identify parts of a circle.
Step 10) Pip Cleaner: 1. Place a pip cleaner through point E. Step 11) Label the following: 1. Point E as the Point of Tangency. 2. The plate above the pip cleaner as the Tangent Line.

10 Learning Target: I can identify parts of a circle.
Step 12) Pip Cleaner: 1. Place a gold pipe cleaner through point F and G. Step 13) Label the following: 1. The plate above the pipe cleaner as the Secant Line.
