Bell Work Paraphrase the following Performance Objective; use the vocabulary to help you. How would you explain the objective to another student? 8.RI.8 Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient; recognize when irrelevant evidence is introduced. Delineate: describe something precisely Sound: reliable, or holding acceptable views Sufficient: enough; adequate Relevant: closely connected or appropriate to the matter Irrelevant: not connected with or relevant to something.

Ethos: or ethical appeal—means to convince an audience of the author’s credibility or character
Pathos: emotional appeal Logos: convince through logic or reason (facts, stats., etc.)

As you watch and listen, focus on the ethos, pathos and logos in the news clip presented by the interviewers and interviewees.

Annotate the Article: First Read
First Reading Focus: Identify evidence that demonstrates ethos, pathos, and logos by underlining text examples and explaining the connection in margins of the text.

Annotate the Article: Second Read
Second Reading: On the back of the article, summarize the arguments presented in the text.

Evaluate the Arguments
In paragraph form: Decide which argument for the issue in, “Monkey business? PETA sues to give copyright to macaque who took selfies” is more effective. Provide one piece of text evidence for each side of the issue. Evaluate which piece of evidence was more sound, relevant, and sufficient.
