4. Bright Futures Florida Academic Scholars
3.5 weighted GPA on select core classes
Test score: 1290 SAT or 29 ACT (these scores may change)
100 hours of documented community service
Florida Medallion Scholars
3.0 weighted GPA on select core classes
Test Score: 1170 SAT or ACT: 26 (these scores may change)
75 hours of community service
Vocational Gold Seal

5. Community Service
Students must submit a community service proposal to have documented service hours.
Hours are not required for graduation, only Bright Futures and scholarships.
Service hours must be submitted to Guidance Counselor before graduation!
Forms available in the Guidance lobby, Edsby and on the SCHS Guidance website.

6. Dual Enrollment / AP
Dual Enrollment involves taking college classes while in high school. DE starts a college GPA and not doing well could jeopardize college admission. Plus, it is hard to recover a low GPA and could affect scholarships.
Students take the AP exams to possibly earn college credit; Scores are not received until mid-July and do not affect HS grade or college admission.

7. College Ready Grade Point Average
Difficulty of curriculum (Important for seniors to take a rigorous senior year to better prepare themselves for college, also to be more competitive for admissions)
Students slacking off in senior year will find the transition to university that much more challenging.
University is at a much faster pace, students have less specific direction and requires a lot of self-discipline and work.
SAT or ACT scores (all juniors will take SAT on March 7th)
Look at school websites and visit college campus over Spring Break and Summer.

8. School Day SAT for Juniors
March 7th during the school day!!!
Benefits
- FREE (a savings of $46)
- Free test practice through Khan Academy and College Board
- Juniors will have their March 7th registrations completed for them
- Biggest bonus…Get the score you need and you won’t need Saturday testing!

9. Community College/ Tech Schools
Check entrance requirements (SAT / ACT / PERT / TABE).
Visit campuses to check out what programs are available.
Hillsborough Technical Colleges (Erwin, Leary, Brewster, etc.) offer affordable career training. Many of their programs can be completed in less than 2 years!!

10. Military / Career If you are interested in the military –
Start meeting with recruiters.
Take the ASVAB
Use resources such as the Occupational Outlook Handbook ( and Florida Shines ( for information about specific careers.
Research apprenticeship opportunities through local unions.

11. Graduation Requirements
4 English 4 Math-include Algebra I + Geometry 3 Science- must include Biology 3 Social Studies- must include World History, US History, Economics, + US Government) 1 Practical or Performing Art 1 H.O.P.E. (Health + Physical Education) 1 Online Class 2 Foreign Language (College Bound Students) Electives to equal 24 credits Reading courses will be scheduled as needed ******Remember this is the minimum to get a HS diploma, college admissions may require additional classes (including foreign language and other academic courses)!

12. Programming… Everyone should have a: - Programming Sheet
- Pen or Pencil
Make sure your name, student # and grade level are on the form!
Please write in the name of your English teacher.

13. Schedule Change Policy
Schedule changes will be made automatically for the following reasons:
Completion of a summer school course (Florida Virtual/HVS)
Incomplete schedule (missing a class)
Two courses in the same period in the same semester
Failure of a prerequisite course
Master schedule conflict
Dual Enrollment (once approved)
Senior needing a graduation requirement
To balance classes so that overcrowding does not occur
Schedules will not be changed for the following reasons:
Student/parent does not like the teacher
To have classes with friends
Teacher is ‘too hard’ or ‘too easy’
The teacher gives too much work
Student/parent change interest after ‘trying out’ a class
Requesting a different lunch
Just because you don’t need it…
You must take 7 classes!

14. How to fill out the form Core Courses Electives
Determine which courses you need for graduation
Decide which courses you should take to help you with your future college/career plans
Look at the options for each subject area
Fill in the course name
Circle the level
Have your current teachers sign under “Teacher Recommendation”
Electives
You must list 7 electives! Your first choices are not guaranteed.
Make sure you choose at least 2 semester electives (marked *)
Consider…
Have you completed your Art (A)?
Digital Info Tech should have an (A)
Have you completed HOPE?
Are you working towards being a program completer?
What classes could help you towards your college/career plans?
Teacher recommendation needed for level 2 or higher of a course.

You need four (4) English credits to graduate – English 1, 2, 3, and 4.

16. Math
You need four (4) math credits to graduate including Algebra 1 and Geometry.
Please ask your math teacher for his/her recommendation, but here are some options to consider:
Algebra 2 Statistics (H)
Math for College Readiness AP Statistics
Advanced Topics AP Calculus AB
Trigonometry/Math Analysis (H) AP Calculus BC
Pre-Calculus (H) MAC 1105 (College Algebra – dual enrollment)
*** Universities expect students to have a math class in their senior year (even if they don’t need another math).

17. Science
You need Three (3) Science credits to graduate including Biology.
You may wish to take additional science classes based on your future plans. Some options include:

Anatomy/Physiology Honors AP Biology
Marine Science Honors AP Chemistry
Chemistry (regular or honors) AP Environmental

19. Dual Enrollment Requirements: Unweighted (state) GPA of 3.0 or higher

21. Important notes…
This is YOUR opportunity to choose your classes for 12th grade!!
Think carefully…we all know schedule changes are hard to come by.
Our district requires students enroll in seven (7) periods.
You will have classes in your schedule that you don’t “need” for graduation. Choose classes that can help you with your future plans or that interest you.
If you plan to take “virtual” periods you will need to actually take classes on FLVS and have a form signed by a parent/guardian.
You must turn in the form with signatures from both your teachers and parents.
