1 What is the Value of Chemistry?
August 27, 2013 K. Culbertson

2 Essential Question: What i$ the value of Chemi$try?
What would you like to have more of? (it must be something tangible) How could you get it? Dow Jones Industrial Average

3 2001 – 9/11 October 7, War 2009 – recession (2008 – housing market crash) Dow Jones Industrial Average (Black & Green – last 6 days as of 8/25/11)

5 Monetary exchange, investment, dental crowns, jewlery (pure 24 karat is brittle – so it is alloyed with a base metal – copper, silver, palladium), computers, food and drinks (cocktails with gold leafs)

6 Gold has been a valuable and highly sought-after precious metal for coinage, jewelry, and other arts since long before the beginning of recorded history.  The world consumption of new gold produced is about 50% in jewelry, 40% in investments, and 10% in industry. Dentistry, electronics nad other fields. Its high malleability, ductility, resistance to corrosion and most other chemical reactions, and conductivity of electricity lead to many uses of gold, including electric wiring, colored glass production and even gold leaf eating.

7 An ancient tradition with the primary objective of creating a mythical "philosopher's stone," which was said to be capable of turning base metals into gold or silver, and also act as an elixir of life that would confer youth and immortality upon its user. Alchemy can be viewed as a proto-science, a precursor to modern chemistry, having provided procedures, equipment, and terminology that are still in use. Base metals: Examples include iron, nickel, lead and zinc. Copper is considered a base metal as it oxidizes relatively easily, although it does not react with HCl. Elixer of life/philosopher’s stone – potion

8 What alchemists got right…
The 'squared circle' or 'squaring the circle' is a 17th century alchemical glyph or symbol for the creation of the Philosopher's Stone. Originally, alchemy was an ancient tradition of sacred chemistry used to discern the spiritual and temporal nature of reality, its structure, laws, and functions. Gold is Good
