1 Vocational Education

2 Prepares individuals for jobs that are based on manual or practical activities related to a specific trade/occupation Sometimes referred to as technical education because it develops expertise in a particular group of techniques or technology (skills on how to do something) Vocational programs are offered both at the secondary or post-secondary level and can interact with the apprenticeship system

3 Apprenticeship: Method in which trainees learn a trade by hands-on experience while working with a skilled worker, usually under a written or implied agreement, after completing a program or on the job training.

4 At the post-secondary level, vocational education is provided by an institute of technology or by a local college (ex. Champlain, Dawson, Vanier) Programs are divided into modules, each representing a competency. You are considered to have acquired a specific competency when you have passed a given module. Length of programs: 3 to 18 months. *Prerequisites: Sec. 4 English, French, Math. Some programs available at the Sec. 3 level

5 Diploma in Vocational Studies
DEP/DVS: This first level offers complete professional training in a particular field of study which allows the graduate to quickly access the labour market. The length of DEP/DVS varies from 6 to 18 months.

6 Attestation in Vocational Specialization
AVS: This second level of training opens doors to a specialty allowing a student to deepen his knowledge in a given trade and, at the same time, meet particular demands in the related work field. A DVS is a prerequisite to register for an AVS. Length of an AVS is 3 to 8 months.
