The Louisiana Territory belonged to Spain, but Americans were allowed to travel down the Mississippi River and trade in New Orleans, which was vital for western farmers.

President Jefferson and the Senate used the government’s treaty-making powers to allow the purchase of the entire Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million.
The Louisiana Purchase:

sold by the French
Jefferson wanted the land and access to the Mississippi River.
This event helped the economy and provided more land for settlement.

Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to explore the new territory and the Pacific Northwest, and sent Zebulon Pike on two expeditions heading due west.
The goal of the Lewis & Clark mission was to gather information about the new land and map a possible Northwest Passage (a water route across North America)

Jefferson sent Zebulon Pike on two expeditions heading due west.
Pike mapped the Midwest and Southwest regions of North America through the Great Plains and into northern Mexico along the Rio Grande river.

Federalists in the Northeast wanted to secede (leave the union) because of the Louisiana Purchase.
They feared the New England states losing power in Washington, D.C.
Federalists hoped Aaron Burr would be able to convince New York to secede but Alexander Hamilton heard about this and accused Burr of treason.
In a duel over the issue, Aaron Burr shot and killed Alexander Hamilton.
