We have just one class, but what we have to say will crucial to your potential in life! You as students are the driving force to who you will be and what outcome you will have after you graduate. But you don’t have to do it alone! Our office partners with the Fleishman Center (Career Services) to provide supplemental service, utilizing instructional efforts to enable student and alumni towards self-empowerment. What that means is, the effort you put will drive us to help you achieve! Brief Question: Beyond Academics, what is the most important thing to prepare before applying for jobs? -Resume? -Degree? -ACTUALLY, it is your skills and abilities! Though a resume, cover letter, and degree are VITAL; without knowing what specific content or experiences to highlight they may not be as effective Fleishman Center

Minding the Gap Employers Personal Academics Dream Job
Personal Career Preparation This graph illustrates the magnitude of career preparation and the effort needed to accomplish gaining those skills and abilities. [Click] This red bubble illustrates your innate skills and abilities from birth, and the placement on the graph will vary by individual. As more effort is placed, the red bubble will rise. As you become more career ready, the red bubble will move further to the right. But the inverse is also possible. [Click] This green bubble illustrates education. Some early education may take less effort, but as you will see college will take more than high school and so on. Some education will occur towards your career preparation, but some times you find that you need to change your major to better fit your skills and abilities. [Click] This blue bubble illustrates employers. Little jobs take less combined education, career preparation, and effort. Some employers may require more education (on the job or academic). [Click] This star illustrates your dream job. It will take X amount of career preparation (skills and abililties) and Y amount of effort. The key to move your red bubble to that star will be what those skills and abilities are that you gain from academics and what skills and abilities you are lacking. Assessing your skills and abilities Searching for what skills you need Assessing your skills may seem simple, but as you can see with our self-assessment there are many levels to prepare and explore. Once exploring, some of these tools such as O-Net can help you find career options and skill. There are also other ways to explore potential career paths. FOR EXAMPLE we arranged for Tim Kelly from Macedon Technologies will be talking with you in a few weeks during class. Cross-referencing this with what skills you need for a job may help aid you in choosing your path. This will aid you in knowing what you possess as well as areas you need to improve.

Understand the full picture of Employment Develop a targeted approach to find your dream job Depending on your personal preference, there are different elements (salary, location, application) During some workshops we explore these websites. [Point out aspects of the website while clicking through] As you can see, these sites ultimately aid in your preferences in hireBING. HireBING is vital in what Binghamton University (Watson and Fleishman) has to offer. Each student already has a profile, but it is up to you to make sure it is complete. On the BU website, search “hireBING” and log in using your BU and password. Click on the profile make sure you complete it 100%

And sharing with you ways to connect with alumni and industry through site visits, info-sessions, and other opportunities like HACK-BU and ACMs that will enrich your experiences.

Watson 105 Career Horizons Watson Career Connections | Bingo Utilize Fleishman and Watson Career and Alumni Connections (Events and Services) Workshops Info-Sessions And here are just a few! Watson 105 is a non-credit course that reviews and helps develop essential skills and abilities for Watson students. This course is funded through you all, and should be taken advantage of. Over 5 classes you explore what you need to launch your career, and how to achieve it. Career Horizons is a road map through your time in undergrad. It is built from the textbook used in Watson 105. The Watson Career Connections Bingo sheet provides hyperlinks to tools you can use in real time and build your personal skills and abilities.
