Bell Work 9/13/2016 Take a “Geography of Europe” notes handout from the handout drawer of your supply tower. Glue in to page 25 of your comp. book. Make a note to bring a device tomorrow!!!

Geography of Europe

Geography of Europe The continent of Europe is a huge peninsula, with many smaller peninsulas branching out from it. As a result, most land in Europe lies within 300 miles of a seacoast. How could this affect the economy of Europe? This encouraged trade & helped the economy grow.

Rivers and Seas Why is this important?
Major rivers flow from inland mountains into the oceans and seas surrounding the continent. These rivers are navigable. wide and deep enough for ships to use. Why is this important? People and goods can sail easily from inland areas to the open sea & to other parts of the world.

Protection Europe’s seas and rivers provided protection as well as possibilities for trade. The English Channel separated the islands of Britain & Ireland from the rest of Europe. Wide rivers also kept groups of people separated.

Mountains The Pyrenees isolated what is now Spain & Portugal from the rest of Europe. The Alps separated Italy from central Europe. The Carpathians cut off what is now Ukraine & Russia from southeast Europe. How do these natural boundaries affect people on different sides of the rivers or mountains? They kept people & cultures apart.

Assignment Using page & RA14, RA15 of your textbook, label and color the map of Medieval Europe. Follow the directions on the map. You will turn your map in at the end of class, so make sure you are ON TASK!!! Exit Ticket: How did geographical features affect the development of Europe during the Middle Ages?
