The aim of the strategy paper for inland waterway transport is to strenghten this mode of transport in the European Union by Involving relevant stakeholders (shippers, experts, policy makers) and experts form the sector Identifying gaps and measures to provide input for the national and European Transport policy. 3 Challenges of Freight Transport in Europe…
Challenges for the future increasing freight volume  CO2 emissions bottlenecks in infrastructure limited road capacity public and political pressure Sustainability has emerged as a field of particular interest in logistics and supply chain management, and particular attention has been paid to sustainable development in the transport sector. Freight transport represents one area which can strongly contribute to a sustainable supply chain since transport is the most environmentally harmful area in terms of emissions within the logistics sector (Whiteing, 2010). In fact, the transport sector causes 20.3% of worldwide carbon dioxide emissions (International Transport Forum, 2010). A measure to reduce the negative effects of freight transport is a modal shift towards sustainable transport modes such as railways or inland waterways. Currently, inland navigation and railways have a low share of the European modal split compared to a 75% share of road transport (Eurostat, 2016). 6 The Main Barriers in the Baltic Sea Region
Inland waterway transport is not well developed: Basic infrastructural needs Digitalization & Data: RIS ? Different legal systems and requirements for vessels in the region Transnational cooperation is needed : Strong institute Integration in the (intermodal) logistics chain is lacking: lobby and better marketing needed People and politicians lack knowledge and awareness for inland waterway transport … learn from best practices (e.g. Danube Region)

Transport sector is responsible for ¼ of greenhouse gases Knowledge of Sustainable Transport for Future Decision Makers Sustainable Development Requirements Meet demand for people trained in logistics Students must be able to transfer knowledge from theory into practice Use field trips, lectures from the industry and real-life cases

11 Closing the knowledge gap of inland waterway logistics …
Developing customized educational- offers (high quality and up-to-date teaching and learning and materials) you can use for free – also in English Creating a competence center for inland waterway transport offering transport school labs (workshops) to raise acceptance of the Danube as environmentally friendly way of transport and train educators about inland waterway transport
