Sustainability has emerged as a field of particular interest in logistics and supply chain management, and particular attention has been paid to sustainable development in the transport sector. Freight transport represents one area which can strongly contribute to a sustainable supply chain since transport is the most environmentally harmful area in terms of emissions within the logistics sector (Whiteing, 2010). In fact, the transport sector causes 20.3% of worldwide carbon dioxide emissions (International Transport Forum, 2010). A measure to reduce the negative effects of freight transport is a modal shift towards sustainable transport modes such as railways or inland waterways. Currently, inland navigation and railways have a low share of the European modal split compared to a 75% share of road transport (Eurostat, 2016).
