Gravity and Elastic Forces
Forces NTS, Part 2 Gravity and Elastic Forces
2
EQS What is gravity? How is weight different from mass?
3
#1 Gravity is a force that pulls objects toward each other.
4
Gravity and Acceleration-
#2 Gravity and Acceleration- At sea level gravity pulls objects towards the center of the Earth at a rate of 9.8 m/s2, (regardless of mass)
5
#3 Gravity keeps the PLANETS in ORBIT around the SUN. It also keeps the MOON in orbit around EARTH. Gravity makes the planets a spherical shape b/c it is pulling the parts towards the center.
6
#4 The Universal Law of Gravitation states that the force of gravity acts between all objects in the universe.
7
#5 The mass and distance of objects effect gravity. ↑ mass =↑gravity
distance=↓gravity
8
#6 Object falling through the air experience a type of fluid friction called air resistance Air resistance provides an upward resistance to falling objects
9
#7 An object free falls until air resistance and gravity equalize their forces. min 5 min
10
Weight = Mass X Acceleration due to gravity
#8 Weight = force of gravity plus mass on a person or obj at the surface of a planet Mass = amount of matter an object contains Weight = Mass X Acceleration due to gravity Weight vs. Mass
11
Weight changes! Mass stays the same!
12
#9 Elasticity is how easily an object returns to its original shape after it is squeezed or stretched. Ex: rubber band
13
#10 A compression force squeezes or pushes matter together.
Becomes shorter EX: sitting on a couch
14
#11 Tension stretches or pulls matter. Becomes longer
Ex: fish on a fishing line
