1 SAP on Azure Architecture

2 What is so attractive on SAP workload on Azure?
Customers usually run 3-15 different SAP products For every product the customer has at least 3 systems like: Production, Test and Development For some of the main systems, like SAP ERP customers have up to 10 systems  Many servers or VMs motivate customers to look for less expensive infrastructure opportunities  Projects often require systems with limited life time  Projects often require short time to deploy systems  no time for procurement of infrastructure

3 Why is it easy to move a SAP system into Azure?
SAP NetWeaver architecture is well understood Workload sizing framework of SAP is complete like no other Mapping of workload encountered on-premise to Azure VMs very simple Lift and shift process very simple So far exclusive IaaS play Works excellent in cross-premises scenarios (see next slide)

4 Scenarios customers use
Run parts of SAP landscape or whole SAP landscape on Azure (see details later) Have Site-To-Site or Express Route connectivity between Azure and on-premise datacenter Deploy SAP systems in Azure VMs Customer are in various stages in this process From having a few small development or non-production system To having their whole SAP landscape in Azure Largest one with 7TB SAP ERP and 4TB SAP BW used by a few thousand users

5 SAP Deployment on Azure in Hybrid IT scenario
Communications through VPN tunnel or ExpressRoute connection On-Premise AD/DNS extended into Azure On-premise and Azure located SAP systems in same domain/AD Communication between SAP systems in Azure and on-premise completely transparent Every single customer using SAP on Azure beyond demo or trainings scenario is using this setup with VPN/ExpressRoute Supported for Hybrid and productive SAP landscapes in Azure

6 Selection criteria of Azure VMs for SAP
Not all Azure VM types are certified for SAP – Minimum requirements for VMs: At least 2 vCPUs Ratio between memory and vCPU at least 6GB:1vCPU  Not all Azure VMs qualify Other rules for certification of VM SKUs: Some of the VM SKUs are exclusively certified with Premium Storage. E.g. No SAP certification for G-series, but certification of GS-Series If largest VM within a VM series does not show good enough results with Standard Storage, we will not certify any of the VMs of the series and rather wait for VM series being available with Premium Storage. E.g.: Dv2 series We are not making any difference between VMs for the SAP application layer (as good as no storage interaction) and DBMS VMs (sensitive to storage latency and throughput)

7 AZURE VM SKUS SUPPORTED FOR SAP
SAP Note – SAP Applications on Azure: Supported Products and Azure VM types   *) The DS series in a 3-tier configuration is only supported with DB data files and DB transaction log files placed on Azure Premium Storage. **) The GS series (2-tier and 3-tier) is only supported with DB data files and DB transaction log files placed on Azure Premium Storage. ***) Please check with through SAP customer message on specifics of this configuration VM Type VM Size 2-Tier SAPS 3-Tier SAPS DB Server for 3-Tier Supported Required Azure Storage for Database Files  A5    2 CPU,   14 GB    1,500    12,000  Yes  Standard  A6    4 CPU,   28 GB    3,000    25,000  A7    8 CPU,   56 GB    6,000    50,000  A8 / A10  11,000 ***  No  A9 / A11  16 CPU, 112 GB  22,000  D11    2,325  D12    4,650  D13    9,300  D14  18,600  DS11*    2 CPU,   14 GB  Premium  DS12*    4 CPU,   28 GB    48,750  DS13*    8 CPU,   56 GB    91,050  DS14* DS11v2 3530 Yes Premium DS12v2 6860 DS13v2 12300 DS14v2 24180 DS15v2 20 CPU, 140GB 30340  GS1**    2 CPU,   28 GB    3,580    34,415  GS2**    4 CPU,   56 GB    6,900    78,620  GS3**    8 CPU, 112 GB  11,870  137,520  GS4**  16 CPU, 224 GB  22,680  247,880  GS5**  32 CPU, 448 GB  41,670

8 SAP NetWeaver certifications
SAP and Microsoft have tested and certified Microsoft Azure IaaS against the same standards as those used for on-premises infrastructure. The table below shows a list of product certified today. SAP Solution Guest OS Database VM Type SAP Business Suite based on SAP NetWeaver Windows Server; SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) Red Hat Linux, Oracle Linux SQL Server; Oracle1; DB2; SAP ASE A5-A11, D11-D14, DS11-DS14, DS11v2-DS15v2, GS1-GS5 SAP TREX, SAP Live Cache, SAP Content Server SQL Server; Oracle; DB2; SAP ASE SAP Business Objects (BI) including Data Services Windows Server NA SAP NetWeaver SQL Server, Oracle; DB2; SAP ASE 1Oracle DBMS only support on Windows Guest OS in Azure

9 SAP on Azure (Any DB) <1.5k SAPS 41K XX 350K XXX Windows SQL
SAP Business Suite 6 SAP all in one SAP NetWeaver 7 SAP Business Objects SAP Business One <1.5k SAPS 41K XX 350K XXX 2 Tier SAP on Azure (Any DB) 3 Tier Windows SQL Windows/Oracle Linux Oracle Windows/SLES/RHEL DB2 Azure can run all kinds of SAP applications with Any DB / – SAP Business Suite including ECC/ERP, SCM, HCM, All-in-one, NetWeaver including / BW, Portal, PI/XI/EAI, Solution Manager, Business Objects and Business One ERP. Most of SAP customers are very likely to be running/ latest versions / – such as SAP Business Suite 6 and NetWeaver 7 / because SAP doesn’t support anything older than that / in the first place. So it’s not always mandatory for us Microsoft / to check customer’s SAP versions. Azure supports all SAP certified database / including Oracle, DB2, ASE and MaxDB / with a variety of OS choices including Linux. While Windows/SQL is the most mature OS/DB platform to run SAP on Azure, / our support of Oracle database / together with Windows or Oracle Linux / is another great option / for those currently running SAP on UNIX/Oracle platform. SAP OS migration from UNIX to Windows / or Oracle Linux is very common. Note that there’s no roadmap for certification / for Oracle and Red Hat and SUSE anytime soon / due to non-technical reason from Oracle. Also, our support of DB2/ASE with SUSE Linux and Red Hat Linux / is compelling for customers / currently running UNIX/DB2/ASE / and are open to OS migration. SAP SD benchmark shows Azure VM can run / up to 41k SAPS with 2-tier / which is a single VM / and up to 350k SAPS with 3-tier / which is multiple VMs with application server scale out. SAPS is the indicator to measure / processing power /of SAP sales and distribution transactions. So more SAPS / more powerfully the infrastructure can run SAP transactions. With this scalability / and comprehensive OS/DB support / Azure D and G Series VM can run / > 90% of world’s SAP production systems. With Azure M Series VM / to be released and certified by SAP this calendar year, / # of SAPS that azure can run / will significantly increase / and we’ll be able to cover / even more SAP on Any DB. Windows/SLES/RHEL ASE Including TREX, LiveCache and Content server. Only NetWeaver 7.00 and later SAP releases of NetWeaver are supported for deployment in Azure

10 SAP HANA certifications
SAP Solution Supported OS Azure Offerings SAP HANA Developer Edition (including the HANA client software comprised of SQLODBC, ODBO-Windows only, ODBC, JDBC drivers), HANA studio, and HANA database)1 SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) A5-A11, D11-D14, DS11-DS14, DS11-DS15v2, GS1-GS5 SAP HANA One SLES DS14_v2 (upon general availability) SAP S/4HANA SLES, RHEL Non-production and Controlled Availability for GS5 VMs Production and non-production SAP HANA on Azure (Large Instances) SAP Business Suite on HANA (OLTP) Non-production on GS5 VMs SAP HANA Platform or Enterprise Edition for SAP BW (OLAP) and BW/4HANA SLES.
