Inspiration 9 Comprehend. Create. Communicate. Achieve More. You’ll learn to do the following: Start a new diagram Enter a main idea Add ideas quickly using the RapidFire tool Use the Create tool to add a linked symbol Point and type to add an unconnected symbol Connect ideas using the Link tool Label the connections between ideas Arrange a diagram using the Arrange tool Save a document • Print a document

2 Getting Started Inspiration uses different environments:
Diagram: (recommended for most users): create diagrams that show connections between ideas or concepts. Outline: create indented, listed text summarizing main points and details Screen Shots – where to find it Options – diagram mode/ Can locate and open program – slide 1 Glossary: environment Map: create branches of linked topics around a central idea. Templates: Pre-made documents providing a guiding structure.

3 Working with Diagrams You’ll begin this tutorial by starting a new diagram. This creates a new document with the Main Idea symbol centered on screen. The Main Idea symbol provides a starting point for your work. (i-1) Can create diagram – slide 2 Can add text to bubble Tip: Click on a symbol once to see four squares showing it is active.

4 Adding Text to Symbols Double-click the symbol, select ‘Main Idea’
Then replace it with your topic.

5 Add Symbols 1. On an active symbol, Click RapidFire.
Use these four ways to add topics and ideas to your diagram: 1. On an active symbol, Click RapidFire. A lightning Bolt appears in the active symbol, Type your idea in the same symbol Press Enter on your keyboard try For brainstorming without connected ideas (i-1) Can use rapidfire 2. On an active symbol, click Create. a new symbol appears 3. Click on the white background. The cross shows were the idea will be placed. Start typing. 4. Click a symbol from the Symbol Palette. Then double click on the symbol and start typing.

6 Linking Ideas Make first symbol active (four squares)
Then click Link icon, (i-1) Can select, organize and link ideas Click the second symbol to link together. Tip: Clicking on the diamond also links symbols together

7 Label the connections between ideas
Each link has a text box that appears when the link is selected. Adding text to this box defines the relationship between the symbols. Select the link between Non-Fiction and Table of Contents Double click on an active link to input text. Or right-click on the link text box and choose from the Linking Phrases shortcut menu

8 Organizing Ideas Make all or part of the diagram active
Click Arrange icon Choose the type of layout desired Click More Options to choose different arranged patterns.

9 Save On the file menu click Save As…
To save a document for the first time, or to save a document you’ve already saved using the current file name, use the Save As command. On the file menu click Save As… Tip: It’s a good idea to save your work on a regular basis. Can save files to proper locations Make sure all work is saved in the H: drive, not My Documents Click the Drop Down Menu to select (H: ) Click Save

10 Print Before you print your project use Page Setup …
On the file menu click Page Setup… Can print Specify layout options: orientation margins page headers and footers Scaled to multiple pages

11 Print Once you’re ready — to print… On the file menu click Print…
Can print Choose your printer Click OK

12 Inspiration Part 2 You’ll learn to do the following:
Add a note to a symbol Adjust bubbles/ideas font, size colour bubble colour shape Search for a symbol Browse symbol libraries Change the zoom

13 Adding and Using Notes A note is available for each symbol in a diagram. Notes allow you to expand ideas and actually begin the writing process while continuing to work in a visual format. Click on your symbol to make it “active” Can add and use notes Click the Note icon The note box appears. Type additional details/idea in the note

14 Adjust Bubbles/Ideas To change text format, line options & colour, and to make the diagram smaller or larger, use the bars at the bottom of the screen. Make symbol active Change the symbol by selecting the options on the bottom toolbar. Adjust: font size symbol colour text line thickness zoom in zoom out Can adjust bubbles/ideas (font, size, colour,/bubble colour, size, shape) Can zoom in and out Can move lines, arrange ideas - ? Tip: press ‘Ctrl + E’ to fit the whole diagram onto the screen. Group ideas by colour/shape, for example: supporting details are yellow.

15 Then click on your desired symbol from the palette
Symbols Inspiration provides a variety of pictures and images to represent concepts and ideas. Make the symbol active Then click on your desired symbol from the palette Can add pictures from library or Tip: You can also use drag and drop to add a symbol from the Symbols palette Inspiration’s search function makes finding just the right image a snap.

16 Inspiration Part 3 You’ll learn to do the following in Outline View:
Switch from Diagram View to Outline View Add a topic Add a subtopic Move a topic by dragging Add a note And Transfer your document in any view to Microsoft Word

17 Outline View While you’ve been creating a web of your ideas in Diagram View, Inspiration has also been working behind the scenes, building an outline of your work. Click the Outline button on the Main toolbar Can use outline view Your information appears in the Outline Environment Tip: You can always begin a new outline from scratch by clicking the Outline button on the Inspiration Starter

18 Outline View There are many ways to organize your outline. The most direct is simply dragging a topic up or down in the outline. Any subtopics associated with this topic move too. Click on Real Facts Click and Drag the topic so it is positioned directly below Titles and Subtitles Can rearrange ideas in order

19 Outline View You can add a new topic in Outline View as easily as you added a new symbol in Diagram View. Select Main Idea and replace with your first idea by double clicking Click Subtopic to add an indented second idea. Use the arrow keys to change the order if required Press Enter on selected idea to add detailed notes

20 Transfer When you are ready to finalize your work for publication, you can easily transfer it to Microsoft Word. Tip: Make sure you Save your Document first! Include the diagram: your diagram will transfer as an image to MS Word. Topics/Hidden Subtopics: information inside of the boxes will transfer to MS Word. Prefixes: Assigns a prefix to each topic and subtopic. Notes/Hidden Notes: typed text in the note boxes will transfer to MS Word. Indentation: Indents topics/notes one level. Subtopics indent two levels. On the Main toolbar, click the Transfer button A closer look at the Transfer Options Can transfer template to Word The Transfer Options dialog appears. Select your preferred options and click OK

22 Inspiration Templates
You can find a number of premade templates and graphic organizers for Inspiration. Templates are available for Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Thinking and Planning. Topics are collapsed click triangle to open and see all available templates. Can create/use own template

You can also find a number of premade templates and graphic organizers for Inspiration on your Common T school drive. Click Open from the Inspiration Starter screen. Can create/use own template Navigate to the Common T

24 Inspiration “Hot Keys”
Temporarily hide the Symbol Palette by pressing: Ctrl + 8 Automatically view everything in your Inspiration document at once: Ctrl + E

25 Pictures from the Internet
Find an image from the internet Right click on the image and choose Copy Can insert pictures from the internet Right Click and Paste… your image will appear.

26 Audio Tool The audio tool will read any text selected in Inspiration
Click on Utility then Preferences… Next select Audio and then click on Listen Tool Can listen to text The Listen button appears on the toolbar. When you click Listen your cursor will change. Click on the symbol to listen

27 The Word Guide On an active symbol click the Word Guide
Can use Word Guide The Word Guide window displays definitions, synonyms , antonyms and pronunciation.
