3 Figure 2 A schematic picture of transversal structures of dielectric fibers transmitting electromagnetic signals. Permittivity of the core of the fiber, of the cladding, and of the surrounding medium are, respectively, ɛD, ɛC, and ɛS, fulfilling the waveguide condition ɛD>ɛC>ɛS. Permittivity of the core has uniform (A, B) and nonuniform symmetrical transversal (C–E) distributions. Reflection, refraction, and diffraction of the electromagnetic signals are visualized by the full lines with arrows. Profile of the permittivity (denoted by ɛ) as a function of the radius r is on the right hand side of each picture. (A) Dielectric wire: transmission of the signal to the surrounding medium (radiating mode) is on the left and the total reflection, that is, the guided wire (core) mode on the right hand side. (B) Core structure with fiber cladding: total reflection at the boundary between the cladding and the surrounding medium is shown in the middle (cladding mode). (C) Graded-index (permittivity) structure: direction of propagation in the core is gradually diffracted by the permittivity profile changes. (D) Schematic picture of a hypothetical step-index coaxial structure: a dip of the permittivity profile along the axis is shown. (E) Graded-index (permittivity) structure with a dip of the permittivity profile along the axis.
