8 Do Now Thunks

9 Starter: list the different reasons why relationships break up, or people might want a divorce

10 Divorce in Christianity
There are different types of Christians and they do not all believe the same thing about divorce. For example there are Roman Catholics and Church of England. These churches sometimes disagree about things and divorce is one of those things. Roman Catholics are not allowed divorce whereas members of the Church of England are.

11 Divorce in Christianity
A second reason for disagreements among Christians on divorce is that there is a dispute about the teaching of Jesus on divorce. In Mark’s Gospel Jesus said that divorce is not allowed but in Matthew’s Gospel Jesus seemed to make one exception and allowed divorce if one partner had committed adultery. A third reason for the different attitudes is that some Christians lay more stress on the Old Testament than other Christians. The ones who lay stress on the Old Testament are more likely to say that divorce was allowed by Moses.

12 Divorce in Christianity
Roman Catholics can in certain circumstances get an annulment. This means that the church declares that the marriage was not a true marriage and so the couple are free to remarry. A Roman Catholic can get an annulment if one of the 2 people was not a Christian at the time of the marriage; one of them was forced to marry; one of them was not mentally stable at the time of the marriage or if it could be proved that one of them never intended to keep the marriage vows.

13 Divorce in Islam Divorce is allowed in Islam as marriage is a contract between people and not a promise made to God. The Prophet himself married a woman who had been divorced so it must be ok. However there is a hadith in which the prophet Muhammad said that of all legal things divorce is most hated by Allah. As a result Muslims try to discourage divorce by saying that if a person wants a divorce they have to say so in public and then wait a month, then say so again and wait another month and then say so a third time.

14 Divorce in Islam After the third time the divorce is automatic however the interval gives an opportunity for the families and the imam to try to solve any problems. The prophet Muhammad had more than one wife and most of these were either widowed or divorced which shows that divorce is allowed. Note Shi’a Islam has more divorce than Sunni Islam.
