1 Science Starter What kind of elements conduct electricity?
What is the chemical formula for water? What two chemicals are in table salt? Why is it dangerous to text on your phone when you are in the bath? What is an “ion”?

2 Objective SWBAT identify the key differences in properties of ionic and covalent compounds to determine their relative bond strengths

3 Agenda Unit 3 Foldable: The Beginning! Science Starter
Ionic & Covalent Vocabulary Background Ionic/Covalent Exploration Lab Melting Point Conductivity Crystal Structure Analysis Unit 3 Foldable: The Beginning!

4 Compare salt and sugar:
What is the same? What is different?

5 On the particle level: Salt is an Ionic compound – it is made when a Sodium atom transfers one electron to a Chlorine atom. Sugar is a Covalent Compound. It is made when Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen atoms share electrons.

6 INTRODUCTION TO BONDING
Create a Frayer chart, crossword, word map, song or other product to describe each of the words on the vocabulary list. Bond Covalent Ion Network compound Cation Valence shell Anion Electron

8 Let’s Explore!!! Ionic vs. Covalent Exploratory Lab
Visit the stations to complete your worksheet. As you go around, complete the ionic vs. covalent bonding worksheet with a partner. Turn it in to me when you are done.

13 EXPECTATIONS You should be on-task the entire lab.
If you see someone at the microscope, please wait. EVERY group member should make their way to a microscope at some point throughout the lab. I will call your groups up one at a time to observe the melting point. After you have gathered all of your data, you may start on the ANALYSIS questions IN COMPLETE SENTENCES on a SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER I should not hear your voice over anyone else’s.

14 Analysis What conducted electricity? Which had a lower melting point?
What did the 2 look like?

15 Weekly Schedule Tonight: Finish Exploration Lab Analysis
Tomorrow: Foldable and Intro to Lewis Dot Structures Monday: Polyatomic Ions and Transition Ions Tuesday: Early Release Day (ACT for Juniors) Wednesday: Ionic Quiz
