Chemical Reactions Chemistry
2
Learning Goals To be able to explain types of chemical reactions
3
Chemical reactions are everywhere, resulting in changes that we see all around us: fires burn, grass grows, milk sours, and batter bakes into delicious, fluffy cakes.
4
Chemical Reaction In a chemical reaction, one or more substances change into different substances The starting substances are called reactants The substances that are produced are called products.
5
Electrolysis or the decomposition of water is a chemical reaction.
Two other types of chemical reactions are:
6
Combustion Commonly referred to as burning
Combustion is a rapid chemical change that involves oxygen and a fuel Examples of fuel: gasoline, propane, and natural gas Combustion releases energy in the form of heat and light We use the energy from combustion to heat our homes and to cook.
7
Rusting Rusting is a slow chemical change of iron reacting with oxygen and water Iron turns into a reddish-brown compound called iron oxide, or rust Both oxygen and water are needed for rust to happen, and salt (i.e. winter road salt) makes it happen faster Rusting weakens metallic objects that contain iron.

Success Criteria I CAN explain combustion and rusting
