What is matter? Matter - anything that has mass and takes up space.
Examples: Your desk, your bed, water in the ocean, the air in the classroom, YOU.

They don’t take up space.
What is NOT matter? They don’t have mass. They don’t take up space. Light Heat Sound

Particles of Matter Atom – the smallest unit of an element that has the properties of that element Molecule – made up of two or more atoms joined together chemically

Elements Element – a substance made up of just ONE kind of atom

Groups of Elements Metals Malleable - easy to shape or form
Conductors - electricity flows through metal wires Ductile - pulled into thin stands/ wires without breaking Nonmetals Dull Can’t be pounded or stretched out Brittle – break easily Don’t conduct electricity well Noble gases Colorless Odorless Some glow when electricity is added (Neon & Argon)
