Hint- Substitution: “The judge has said that the crime was exceedingly heinous.” Sometimes you can try substitution if you are unsure of the word you are trying to figure out. “Well, I don’t know what ‘heinous’ means, but I know a crime is not a good thing and you can say “the crime was exceedingly bad” and bad would be an adjective here, since it’s describing the crime so I think heinous would be too.”

Remember: Adjectives & Adverbs: Verbs: Nouns:
Ask yourself what part of speech is being modified/described by this word Verbs: Ask yourself what subject does this very belong to? Is it the only verb belonging to this subject? Nouns: “The, a, an” all signal that a noun will follow. However, it may not follow immediately. Ex: The hyper, rambunctious students were so excited for Jeopardy.
