1 9.3 Fermentation Similar to cellular respiration
Anaerobic (without oxygen) Takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell 2 types Alcoholic fermentation – Ex: yeast – makes bread dough rise, alcoholic beverages Lactic acid fermentation – occurs in humans during exercise when your body is short on oxygen; makes muscles “burn” (Also used to make yogurt)

2 Cellular Respiration (9.1) & Fermentation (9.3)
*Each team member is required to give an answer *Otherwise same rules apply *Winners get a sPeCiaL pRizE!!!

4 What is the goal of cellular respiration?
10 pts Cellular Respiration To produce energy from food you eat by breaking chemical bonds

5 Cellular respiration takes place in what organisms?
20 pts Cellular Respiration Cellular respiration takes place in plants, animals, fungi, protists and most bacteria

6 How are photosynthesis and cellular respiration related?
30 pts Cellular Respiration Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are opposing processes. Reactants of one are products of the other, and vice versa

7 What is the balanced equation for cellular respiration?
40 pts Cellular Respiration 6O2 + C6H12O6  6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy

8 What does anaerobic mean?
10 pts Cellular respiration II Without the presence of oxygen

9 In what part of the cell does glycolysis occur?
20 pts Cellular respiration II Glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell

10 What pathway of cellular respiration is anaerobic?
30 pts Cellular Respiration II Glycolysis

11 What are the pathways of cellular respiration that are aerobic, and where do they occur?
40 pts Cellular Respiration II Krebs cycle and electron transport chain Occur in the mitochondria

12 In what organelle does photosynthesis take place? 10 pts Photosynthesis
The chloroplast

13 What are the membranes that capture light energy for photosynthesis?
20 pts Photosynthesis Thylakoid membranes

14 What is produced in photosynthesis?
30 pts Photosynthesis Glucose, and oxygen as a byproduct

15 What is the overall balanced equation for photosynthesis
40 pts Photosynthesis 6CO2 + 6H2O  C6H12O6 + 6O2 light

16 What pigment absorbs light energy?
10 pts Photosynthesis II Chlorophyll

17 True or False: Only plants can perform photosynthesis
20 pts Photosynthesis II False – plants, fungi, and some bacteria can photosynthesize

18 Where do light-independent reactions take place in the chloroplast?
30 pts Photosynthesis II Stroma (the fluid-filled space in the chloroplast)

19 What 3 things are required for light-dependent reactions?
40 pts Photosynthesis II Light, chlorophyll, water

20 Fermentation occurs in the same place in the cell as glycolysis, which is…
10 pts Fermentation The cytoplasm

21 What are the two general kinds of fermentation
20 pts Fermentation Alcoholic fermentation and lactic acid fermentation

22 How is fermentation different from cellular respiration?
30 pts Fermentation Fermentation does not require oxygen, doesn’t occur in mitochondria (takes place in cytoplasm)

23 What kind of fermentation results from strenuous exercise? Explain…
40 pts Fermentation Lactic acid fermentation – if you’ve ever run so hard your muscles burn, it’s because the lactic acid in your muscles has built up due to lack of oxygen in your body

24 Final Jeopardy… Write down your wager

25 Final Jeopardy – Draw! Draw a chloroplast with its internal structures
Label “light independent reactions” and “light dependent reactions”
