1 Workshop objectives and program
Thomas Alfstad, UN-DESA Summer School on Modelling Tools for Sustainable Development June 2017, ICTP, Trieste.

2 Three main objectives of the workshop
Provide hands-on training and build skills in the application of CLEW models Develop national CLEW models that can serve as a foundation for further work Serve as a platform for exchange of experience and help foster cross-country, south-south, partnerships and networks 9/19/2018 Summer School on Modelling Tools for Sustainable Development June 2017, ICTP, Trieste. Organizers: UNDESA, UNDP, ICTP, Cambridge University, KTH

3 Training and building skills
Train participants in development and application of CLEW models to inform policy decisions in countries Provide guidance and practical tips on model development and data management Provide an opportunity for hands-on work with CLEW models Participants have been selected on the basis that they already… Have an proven track record in modelling and quantitative analysis Will act as leaders in national capacity development projects in their home countries 9/19/2018 Summer School on Modelling Tools for Sustainable Development June 2017, ICTP, Trieste. Organizers: UNDESA, UNDP, ICTP, Cambridge University, KTH

4 Building national models
You will be provided with a template for a national CLEW model Your task will be to populate this template with national data to produce a CLEW model of your country The standardized template means that some compromises must be made National models must be tailored to the specific circumstances of individual countries with regards to model scope, structure and detail Models must be tailored to specific policy questions and adjusted through iteration as policy insights emerge and prompt new questions. National models Where national models exists these can be expanded and tailored to needs If no model exist, the model you will build is a great starting point. 9/19/2018 Summer School on Modelling Tools for Sustainable Development June 2017, ICTP, Trieste. Organizers: UNDESA, UNDP, ICTP, Cambridge University, KTH

5 Partnerships and networks
Bring together practitioners from different parts of the world Brings together practitioners from both governments and research/academia Provide a platform for the exchange of views and experiences We hope that friendships and collegial collaborations are started her, that can help foster future coopreration and partnerships. 9/19/2018 Summer School on Modelling Tools for Sustainable Development June 2017, ICTP, Trieste. Organizers: UNDESA, UNDP, ICTP, Cambridge University, KTH

6 Modeling for policy analysis is a long-term endeavor
Acquiring skills in the application of models for policy analysis takes time Training workshops are an important tool to build capacity, but it is not sufficient. Developing skills in quantitative analysis requires time and hands- on practice, which necessitates commitment of time and effort on the part of the professional/trainee This workshop is a compliment to national capacity development projects, not a substitute. Building national models is a long term commitment (1+ years) Requires tailoring to national circumstances and policy questions This cannot be compressed into a 3 week workshop This workshop will help build an initial CLEW model, but a longer term effort is needed to build a model capable of producing relevant and reliable insights for policy formulation 9/19/2018 Summer School on Modelling Tools for Sustainable Development June 2017, ICTP, Trieste. Organizers: UNDESA, UNDP, ICTP, Cambridge University, KTH

7 Workshop conclusion You will be asked to present your modeling results to your colleagues, trainers and few high- level representatives on 27 June. You will be asked to work overnight on the feedback received and present your reaction and a road map on the next day (28 June). You will be asked to write a note, briefing your supervisors and/or government representatives participating in the high-level meeting. 9/19/2018 Summer School on Modelling Tools for Sustainable Development June 2017, ICTP, Trieste. Organizers: UNDESA, UNDP, ICTP, Cambridge University, KTH

8 Modeling CLEWs Sustainable development needs models and modeling skills to support policy decisions We have chosen to focus on CLEWs in this training workshop The CLEWs approach is powerful and flexible, allowing for sector, regional and policy relevance CLEWs cannot answer all questions. Other models and quantitative methodologies are also needed National capacity development projects will address these needs 9/19/2018 Summer School on Modelling Tools for Sustainable Development June 2017, ICTP, Trieste. Organizers: UNDESA, UNDP, ICTP, Cambridge University, KTH
