Do Now How would you define intelligence?
2
Unit 11: Testing and Individual Differences
What is Intelligence?
3
Intelligence Can be a socially constructed concept
Society defines what intelligence is Refers to our mental ability to do 3 things Learn from our experiences Solve problems Use knowledge to adapt to new situations Intelligence test Used to measure mental abilities Usually comparing performance to others
4
One intelligence vs. Multiple
Is intelligence a single factor or is it made up of multiple factors? Spearman: believed that there was as single, general factor (g or g-factor) for mental ability This g-factor was thought to underlie all aspects of intelligence and was being measured on intelligence tests Thurstone tried to challenge this theory but later analysis of his experiment actually supported the idea of a general intelligence Gardner: believes that intelligence is a multi-faceted and came up with a theory of multiple intelligences
5
Gardner’s 8 Intelligences
There are 8 different forms of intelligence, each relatively independent of the others
6
Sternberg’s Multiple Intelligences
Sternberg: believes that a complete theory of intelligence must deal with three types of intelligence (triarchic theory) Analytical: measured by IQ tests, factual and logical Creative: ability to use knowledge in new and creative ways Practical: ability to apply knowledge to real-world situations
7
Comparing Theories
8
Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence could be considered a component of social intelligence. Social Intelligence would mean being able to understand social situations and manage yourself successfully in those situations 4 parts to emotional intelligence Perceive emotion (see it in faces, music, stories) Understand emotion ( predict thing, how they change/blend) Manage emotions (how to express them in different settings) Use emotions to be creative or adaptive individuals may not have high traditional IQ scores, they can be extremely successful due to a high EQ
9
Intelligence & the Brain
A +.33 correlation between brain size and intelligence Highly intelligent people have above average synapses and gray matter Gray matter = neural cell bodies (unit 2) White matter = axons and dendrites (unit 2) People who score high on intelligence tests Retrieve info fast (Unit 7) Perceive stimuli quickly
