2
The Use of Tablets in Nursing Practice
Objectives Review of mobile devices for use by nurses Discuss the history of use of tablets by nurses Current state of use of tablets, pros and cons Recommendation of applications for nursing use
3
The Use of Tablets in Nursing Practice
Setting The setting for this device review is the acute care hospital. The nursing practice venue is Medical-Surgical unit
4
The Use of Tablets in Nursing Practice
Tablets have traditionally not been the primary device used by nursing. The reasons include. Wide spread use of PC’s at the patient bedside (Mace 2013) Tablet Operating Systems (OS) were incompatible with the applications used
5
The Use of Tablets in Nursing Practice
Reason for tablet non use (continued) Inability to effectively sanitize the tablet between patients Until recently tablet use was rudimentary and not intuitive (Millard 2014)
6
The Use of Tablets in Nursing Practice
Acceptance of the use of tablets Change in physical structure allowing sanitizing between patients Increasing availability of OS that function with clinical applications and improvements in wireless networks Widespread use of tablets by the public due to improved user friendliness (Millard 2014)
7
The Use of Tablets in Nursing Practice
Examples of tablets used in health care Apple iPad Samsung Galaxy Microsoft Surface
8
The Use of Tablets in Nursing Practice
Clinical reasons for the use of tablets “Clinicians utilizing mobile technology such as tablets make healthcare decisions more rapidly and with fewer errors” (Airth- Kindree, 2014). Multiple clinical applications on a device readily available at the point of care
9
The Use of Tablets in Nursing Practice
Clinical reasons for the use of tablets Supports a mobile workforce improving workforce efficiency Reduced time away from the patient in comparison to a fixed work station (Millard 2014) Improved data sharing with other systems and applications
10
The Use of Tablets in Nursing Practice
“As data flows in the EMR is going to be a feeder system…. The research and patient care will be done with higher level applications” (Weber, R. as quoted by Millard 2014 p.6)
11
The Use of Tablets in Nursing Practice
Applications Dashboard for nursing performance and meaningful use Combination applications for quick reference tools (Airth-Kindree 2014) Nursing consult or procedure applications
12
The Use of Tablets in Nursing Practice
Use of electronic applications decreases time spend away from the patient Heslop and Raikundalia found that prior to electronic applications there was one hour of paper work for each hour of patient care. (Heslop, 2011)
13
The Use of Tablets in Nursing Practice
The use of tablets creates a mobile workforce Allows for reference application use at the bedside Decreases time away from the patient due to point of care availability of applications
14
The Use of Tablets in Nursing Practice
Recommended applications A dashboard application such as RAPID or Indigo by MEDI-SOLV to inform the nurse of performance related to Meaningful Use and Core Measures Combination application such as Up To Date to provide evidence based resource for patient care A nursing consulting application such as Mosby's Nursing Consult for rapid access to nursing procedure and process information.
