3 What is statistics? Statistics is a field of mathematics that involves collecting and analyzing data. Data is information.  There are 4 steps involved in doing statistics: 1. Develop a question 2. Collect Data 3. Analyze Data Decide how to display your data How can we describe the data? 4. Interpret Data What do the numbers tell us about our class? If we collected data from another class, how would those data look? What does the graph not tell us?

4 Step 1: Develop a question
I want to find out more about the number of people living in the houses/apartments of this class. Which question do you think would help me the most? A. Who does ___________________ live with?  B. Do you like who you live with? C. How many people live in your house or apartment? D. Where have you lived?

8 Histogram A histogram is a type of bar graph that shows how the data is spread out. Example: This histogram shows the ages to people who visited a store one day at the mall:

This group of data is symmetrical.

These data sets are not symmetrical. This data set is skewed left. It looks like it has a “tail” on the left. This data set is skewed right. It looks like it has a “tail” on the right.

12 Stem-and-Leaf Plot A stem-and-leaf plot is a type of graph that shows numerical data. Example: This stem-and-leaf plot shows the number of students in each class in a school.
