DO NOW Get out yesterday’s notes – today’s notes are on the back.
Get out a piece of paper and something to write with, Get out Nomenclature Study sheet.
2
WRITE THE CORRECT NAME / FORMULA
Ionic: NaNO3 CuSO4 BaCl2 barium hydroxide calcium acetate lithium chromate Covalent/Molecular: P4O10 SiO2 N2O3 sulfur hexafluoride dinitrogen pentoxide carbon monoxide
3
ANSWERS Ionic: NaNO3 CuSO4 BaCl2 barium hydroxide calcium acetate
lithium chromate
4
ANSWERS Covalent/Molecular: P4O10 SiO2 N2O3 sulfur hexafluoride
dinitrogen pentoxide carbon monoxide
5
nomenclature Quiz There will be a nomenclature Quiz Tuesday.
6
NAMING ACIDS Acids are substances which give H+ ions when put in water. If you see a compound that starts with an H, chances are it is an acid. Two common exceptions are H2O and H2O2.
7
RULES FOR NAMING ACIDS If the suffix of the anion is “-ide”, the acid compound starts with “hydro-“ and ends with “-ic”. Example: HBr ion is bromide hydrobromic acid
8
PRACTICE HF
9
RULES FOR NAMING ACIDS If the suffix of the anion is “ate”, the acid compound ends in “ic” acid. Example: H2CO3 ion is carbonate carbonic acid
10
PRACTICE HClO3
11
RULES FOR NAMING ACIDS If the suffix of the anion is “ite”, the acid compound ends in “ous” acid. Example: HNO2 ion is nitrite nitrous acid
12
PRACTICE HClO2
13
PRACTICE 1. HNO2 2. H2SO4 3. HC2H3O2 4. HCl 5. HI 6. HCN
14
Comes from carbonate, CO3-2
WRITING ACID FORMULAS Look at the end of the acid name. If the acid ends in “-ic” and does not start with “hydro-”, then the anion ends in “-ate”. Example: Carbonic acid Comes from carbonate, CO3-2 H+ and CO3-2 becomes H2CO3
15
PRACTICE Dichromic acid
16
WRITING ACID FORMULAS Look at the name. If the acid ends in “-ous”, then the ion ends in “-ite”. Example: Nitrous acid Ion is nitrite, NO2-1 H+ and NO2-1 becomes HNO2
17
PRACTICE Hypochlorous acid
18
WRITING ACID FORMULAS Look at the name. If the acid ends in “-ic” and starts with “hydro-”, then the anion ends in “-ide”. Example: Hydrobromic acid Ion is bromide, Br-1 H+ and Br- becomes HBr
19
PRACTICE Hydrofluoric acid
20
PRACTICE Nitric acid Sulfurous acid Phosphoric acid Chromic acid
Hydrobromic acid Hydrosulfuric acid
